India's per capita income is still a paltry $US 286, and may even drop below that, rather than go up. Yet all that's reqd is less govt interference in business, especially the communist ideology of set-asides for particular groups. Free eneterprise must be freed from govt's tyranny.
Yes there are cases of people from the poorer classes climbing up the society. But the trouble is that the globalisers are wont to use these numerically small examples as justification of globalisation and liberalisation. If people of my generation were flocking to metros in the north in seaarch of employment, the current generation travels abroad. It is encouraging. But look at the number of these successes. There are far more at the other end of the spectrum, with degrees and without employment and yet millions more who are not able to get education and are miserably toiling in quarries etc.
Journalsists like Datta had better watch out what is happening at the district levels and whether there is indeed a significant improvement of the lives of people from the poorer sections. Development and succcess stories need to be complemented with statistics -of course with verfiied and independent ones.
Liberalise the economy no doubt and faster at that. But do not get flattered by these success stories.
