Every Govt, both at the centre and the state invent new schemes that has a mass attraction, to keep itself in power. It is immaterial whether it is really worth it or not for the nation to go strong. The writer has rightly pointed out the various schemes which have a retarding effect on the Indian economy. While on one hand there is gradual reduction in the Government hold on the public sectors, proposals are being aired byone state Govt. to take over the earnings of some of the popular temples.
populism was started by gandhi with khilafat movement and then carried over by nehru and indira and now by sonia. It keeps them in power and muslims happy. Jai Hind
I have had the same fears for a while now. But, how is this permitted? This seems to me, to be an inevitable fallout of democracy. Shouldn't the role of the Economic Advisory Committee be precisely this: to forestall blundering, populist governments from enacting potentially harmful economic policies?
I guess a nationwide programme initiated by the government comprising seminars, lectures and colloquia should be conducted in order to reach to the public. As rightly pointed out by the author, this programme should try and educate as many people as possible as to why the 'noble', 'rural/poor-friendly' schemes and programmes carried out by the government would not prove out to be beneficirary in the end. After all in democracy its the people who get to decide the government and they get the government that they deserve.
Like minded people need to get together on those issues & have to be raised in appropriate forums.
We didn't expect such kind of populist measures from such an able leader like MS. Of course, we are forced to believe that he's not the leader of this bunch.
