You have left out the bad decisions and the indecisions that worked against the country's interest. 1) Decision to appoint Nehru as first prime minister instead of Sardar Patel who was the choice of the congress majority. 2) Decision to stop the war in Kashmir in 1948 contrary to the advice of General Kariappa. 3)Decision not to choose Vande mataram as national anthem. 4) Indecision to impose strict population control measures (to appease the muslims) 5) Decision to amend the constitution to undo the Supreme court judgemment in Shah Bano case and to open the gates of Ayodhya as a compensation to the Hindus. 6) Decision to implement the Mandal commission report opening the flood gates of caste politics.

Really you have given the right picture. Particularly, Sardar Patel deserved to be the PM.
India was not in technology apartheid since 1974 and even before 1974 it has not received any technology from USA either. All came from the Soviet Union, without it India could not have industrial development, oil refinery, oil fields, space research, missile development, nuclear weapons and power development and aircraft industries. The author does not want to recognize that because in that case he will not get any Bungalow in New Delhi.
What has India gained by giving up Five Years Plan: now 80 percent of the population in India live with less than $2 a day, the world definition of poor.
What has India gained by Sakti Tests, when Indian missiles are not fitted with any nuclear weapons. India already gave up its nuclear weapons by the India-US Nuclear Treaty it has signed.
Indian Missiles all came from Russia, but that source will dry up very soon, when India has joined the US camp. Thus, Indian space and missile research would end very soon.
This are the kind of authors Indian media is promoting: all slaves and without any brain. Has he got a Harvard MBa just like George Bush or Ramsfeld or Armitage or Chaney

Pessimissim never served anybody. u sure appear to be inclined towards communism as an idealogy. Everyone has a right to his own idealogy , but blind faith is self destructive. As a nation we are just 60 years old, though our heritage goes back a long time. What we have achived in 60 years is indeed commendable when u compare it whith what the US was going through in 1836 ( 1776 60 yrs) or for that matter any of these so called developed and technologically advanced nations of today. so wake up buddy , cut the cynicism and love ur country for what it is.

Mr.Dipak, Do you know how India has paid back our only ally USSR (Now Russia)?. At The time of USSR disintegration from 1USD=1 rouble rate, Rouble has collapsed 1usd=600 to 700 roubles. Rupee was stronger. India had the option to pay the entire loan with either us$ or Rouble but out of sheer goodwill They stood by us thru all the wars and were the only friends-counted, India agreed to pay by old rupee equivelant of Roubles and saved a friend when there was such a financial crisis. Credit for This humane gestrue goes to Chandrasekar/ Narasimharao Govts. By not working with USA now is really counter productive and will isolate us further in nuclear and other strategic areas Thanks Nat Murali
AFTER ALL THESE 60 YEARS NOW WE FACE OUR BIGGEST FRIEND/EMENY THE ENVIRNOMENT, WE SHOULD KEEP RELISHING ABOUT WHAT WE WERE AND WHAT WE ARE. NOW WE SHOULD SEE HOW CAN WE KEEP OUR NEXT GENERATION HEALTHY. JUST PLANT A TREE AND SAVE USE OF PAPER.ATLEAST BY THESE WE WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE NEXT GENERATION OF INDIAN HEALTHY. AFTER ALL HEATH IS WEALTH. THIS WOULD ONE DECISION WHICH WOULD SAVE INDIA TURELY. EVERY OTHER THING IS WELL SAID AND DONE BUT WE CANNOT LEAVE WITHOUT PURE AIR WATER & EARTH FOR ALL. THIS SHOULD BE THE SIXTH DECISION. NEXT WARS ARE DIFFINETLY GOING TO BE ON THESE ONLY. THINK ABOUT IT !!!!!!!!!!. THE TRUE MEANING OF VANDEMATARAM LIES ON NUTURING OUR MOTHER EARTH. THINK GLOBALLY, INDIA WOULD AUTOMATICALLY WILL BE A PART OF IT.
Well said, But Mr. Subramanyan has forgotten one of the most important decisions taken by our Late PM Rajiv Gandhi. He is the one, alongwith his advisor Sam Pitroda, who decided to go for latest technology than import outdated or discarded technology just because it was available cheaper. IF INDIA IS ENJOYING THE FRUITS OF IT BOOM, ALL INDIANS HAVE TO GIVE THE CREDIT TO RAJIV GANDHI. UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE NO RAJIV GANDHIS AND HENCE WE HAVE EVERYTHING TO PRIVATE & MNCs, ACCEPTING THE NAKED TRUTH THAT GOVERNMENT CAN NOT DO IT. DO WE HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR MAHATMA GANDHI OR RAJIV GANDHI?

What exactly Rajob Gandhi or Sam Pitroda did for technology. Sam Pitroda's DOT cannot produce any new technology. Indian telecom system are now all foreign, there is nothing Indian at all. Is this the contribution of Rajob Gandhi and Sam Pitroda?

All Indian Satelites, rockets, etc came from the Soviet Union, not from France or UK or USA since 1956. Sam Pitroda has nothing to do with that. What precisely Sam Pitroda has done except for being a friend of Rajob Gandhi. What Rajib Gandhi has done? Nothing at all. Sam Pitroda was nothing but a big mouth. He has achieved nothing, developed nothing.
This author must be looking for a bungalow in New Delhi, otherwise he could not write such a rubbish.

While agreeing with KS in general, I would add that Rajiv's decision on improving the communication network through computerisation has contributed a lot to the progress of India.
We must salute Rajiv and Sam Pitroda for their contribution in this area.
20 years down the line, we shall realise if construction of golden quadrangle also was a decision that affected the nation building in a significant way.

I agree with Shyamal, These two events esp the first by Rajiv brought business revolution in India. These 2 events changed the image of India to the world. Now we are one of the fastest growing economy in the world. We salute Rajiv for that.

You are bang on target - the Nehru/Gandhi regimes before him shackled the fundamental entrepreneurial spirit of the Indians and gave us the most expensive steel and cement in the world. IT was discouraged because it "led to unemployment". Rajiv and his first team of professionals changed that.

It is shame to say this, but in reality this is what we have acheived.
for the politicians; by the politicians; to the politicians

I agree in totality.
We are just spectators to the "nanga nach" being played by our politicians.
We feel ashamed seeing our so called "LEADRES" fighting in the Parliament. How do we expect them to be better and well cultured since most of them today are with criminal background ?
Amendments are made in Constitution and Laws to accomodate all their needs as and when required.
They have fragmented the society into Dalits/SCs/STs/BCs/OBCs for their personal interests.
Reservations are being used as handy tools by them to run away from their responsibilities of lifting the living standards by educating people. Crores of rupees are collected in form of Education Cess still the Govt. Schools / Panchayat Schools face lack of basic aminities.
I hope we realise this and bring about a revolution to let the politicians know that enough is enough.
