Mumbai
by Gopalakrishnan R on Mar 24, 2008 06:09 PM  Permalink

I have great regard for the city. Its a place where so many people come to make a living, the city is full of life and it teaches us to survive. Yes a major chunk of the tax money comes from the city and the city gets back very little which is very sad. Considering the infrastructure situation in the city its high time government takes action and spend some portion on the money which it receives from this city, on this city.

A rose is a rose is a rose.

A rose by any other (re)name will smell just as sweet.

Mumbai will be the most populous city in the world by 2015.

If it still exists by then. Me thinks at the rate of the population growth in the city, it will be a miracle if it even holds up together.

how does it matter if anyone calls it mumbai or bombay? A more appropriate name would be slumbai I guess..as far as I can see, mumbai's problems have not been solved by the renaming. It's just wasted taxpayer's money and changed the cosmopolitan city of 'bombay' into 'mumbai', the city of parochialism and slums.

how can u call bombay a slum - well there is dharavi which used to be called a slum, but there are building there now. there are also the posh areas in bombay which you can compare to any other world class city. i am sure you are from some remote village in india - stay put there .......and dont comment on one of india's most important city !!!

It was never Mumbai , my friend. The city of Bombay was created by the British after they got the island as dowry from Portugese . There were many places inhabited by Kolis before that. Very few people use Mumbai in private conversations even today...but that said, I think Mumbai sounds a lot better than Bombay. Dubai, Mumbai, Chennai etc gives it a more Eastern feel.

The name of the island was Mumbai. The word comes from the goddess MUMBA and AAI in marathi means mother . So it is Mamba Mata or Mumbai. It was inhabited by Kolis, Pathare Prabhu, Brahmins, Kunbis etc. They were all Marathi speaking. The british changed the name to Bombay, Vandre to Bandra, Pune to Poona and so on and so forth. The british are gone. They have taken the loot. So, now it is part of Maharashtra again and the name is MUMBAI.
