Uncertainties of life
by Mukulmani Barua on Jun 24, 2008 10:15 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

People get into drinking and smoking habits because they are not patient. They want everything instantaneously. When they don't get things done instantaneously, they get tensed and to get rid of tensions, they start drinking and smoking. The best way to deal with such habits would be to engage oneself in activities which enhances one's personality. Reading is a very good habit. This is a great way to pass time when you have to wait. Talking to friends and elderly people and to even children, about what's going on in their lives, is a good time-pass.

-_-

This is about drunken DRIVING. Not smoking and drinking. Those are personal choices that no one has a right to interfere with, unless they interfere with other's right to safety, life etc.

MAKE LAW TOUGH
by tejas lele on Jun 21, 2008 01:39 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Its really sad that more and more youths think drinking and smoking is something like pride. Fine its up to them. But why should other innocent people suffer for their foolish things.

I am also of 23 years old but I have never involved in smoking or drinking. why should other people walking, standing on road come under these bade baap ke bigde shehzaade. what has happened to Alister Pereira and his friends? are they punished?

Law should be made very tough and their should be no bail for these people. Make them suffer to the worst possible extent and then release them. Make the whole country know as to what is the fate of such people by publishing it rather than glorifying them.

We youths are the country's future and need to be educated and patriotic instead of dancing and enjoying the songs of pakistani artists and cheering their shows.

Junping to conclusions
by EnglishImprover on Jun 21, 2008 01:38 PM  Permalink

Let us not jump to conclusions here about youth today, yesterday or tomorrow. The situation with youth might be bad but cannot be guaged using the rising number of youth-involved accidents as a barometer.

Drinking and driving has always been a problem and will always be a problem because parents do not do their duty of bringing up their children properly. But that is not the main problem here.

The main problem is that we are adding more and more vehicles and pedestrian / homeless population into our urban streets without expanding the existing infrastructure. So naturally, there is now more propensity for accidents to happen.

The same sodden brattish youths would have gotten away with it a few years ago (probably their lousy parents did get away with it) when there were fewer cars and fewer people out on the roads, but today, with the same dimensions of roads but manifold increase in vehicle and human population, there is more chance for accidents to happen.

So as I see it, by simple rules of probability, coupled with overactive media ravenous for sensational stories to publish, we are bound to be reading more and more of such data.

Solution ? Parents need to bring up their children properly.

Irresponsible Article

Rediff should stop publishing articles on their whims and fancies. Do they know that the maximum number of deaths due to Road Accidents are caused by BUSES and TRUCKS.
Mostly by old unmaintained GOVT BUSES.

Why blaming ALL youths for 1-2 stray incidents. I guess equal number of old people are involved in accidents. So maybe they should CANCEL LICENSES of all people above 65 years of age.

UTTERLY RIDICULOUS.

Deterrance is the key !
by Jaswinder Sandha on Jun 21, 2008 01:21 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

1. Issue licenses to under 20's only with consent and undertaking of the parents. Cancel parents' license in case of offense of the offspring.
2. Severe punishment. Penalty not in money, but in terms of jail term. Rich brats can always flaunt money and get away, this need to be stopped.
3. Blacklist the offenders for a term of 3-5 years from getting a license. Link the License with PAN, Voter ID numbers etc.
4. Increase the term of punishment to hiher levels.
5. Check the police corruption. Let there be random checks and videography of the operation, and the printouts of the alcohol measuring apparatus.
many more ideas can be generated.

Have a little confusion here. Whom are you calling an Offender ? .. a drunk driver or a drunk driver who met with an accident ?
