Crap. Its true. Both Goans and Mallus who get lots of foreign tourists behave like this. They treat Indians as second class citizens while fawning over the white skinned ones.
This article reflects certain attitude, but I must say it is of bygone times. Indians now are mostly far richer and far more educated then these europeans. Comments abut tipping etc. are just wierd. As incomes have increased , we tip more. Rest of the attitudes can easily be fixed by slapping a couple of descrimination lawsuits .
We respect people who stand in the face of opposition, defy the traditions and walk their own paths. I feel theis blanket respect for everyone who does this is the problem. If someone scans for the 'intellectuals' in India, they all will be someone who is at odds with his caste, religion, state or country. It is this drive to be superior, intellectual, secular or things like that which make us disrespect our own fellowmen, caste, religion or country at large.
The simplest answer is nothing but our temptation to foreign food and products, why do we go and ask for their food? let them make and have and they pay tax. Reason why waiters behave like that is the tip, and most of the time decent behaviour of foreigner, where if some Indian youngsters get together they will start feeling that they can do anything, there will be lot of unjustified demand to waiters, I remember and incident with some guys they ordered food and drinks, that time water asked them do they want food to be served later, one guy refused and asked to serve every thing, the guys where drinking and chatting for at least one hour they started complaining that Bread is not hot, poor waiter has to get it heated twice, we can always say that that his job but most of the foreigners have good manners in planning it or at least to realise that waiter is also a human being. we write english,we try hard to be english- now its not our mother tongue and so we'll always play catchup to the english.Now if the most basic thing for a human - his language is borrowed then everything else in a way is borrowed. I'm surprised why the author is surprised -Gandhijis mool mantra - swadeshi we thick indians didnt get it then nor do we get it now. As for looking through people - for the casteist lot it comes naturally to us - its in our genes.

It sounds quite logical to see this behaviour at this point of time . After hitting the end of the cultural metamorphosis cycle, we will return back to our roots,when we really become proserous and indepedent. This might take a bit of time, but this will happen. we will start cherishing our own languages and cultures then, like how the French/Germans do.

Same situation every where, the situation is worse in the Middle East, whether it is Dubai, Kuwait, Muscat, Qatar, Riyadh or Jeddah the white man always gets the best. Is it money? Is it colonialism or is it just the colour of the skin ?
My office shared the same building with another MNC. I was once standing in the lift to go up to my office. The security chap rushed in suddenly before the lift door closed, stopped the door from closing and shouted at me, "get out and fast". I asked why. "Foreigners are coming; he is the CEO from Japan; get out of the lift". I calmly replied I am not getting out; if the CEO wants to take the lift with me, let him. Otherwise he can wait. The security guard was taken aback. He started to argue, but by that time the foreigners were already there. They didn't say anything, just took the lift with me and got down at their floor and I continued my journey to my office. I think it is always us desis who mistreat desis when we see foreigners. None of the foreigners I have come across (I am working abroad for the past 8 years) have such silly prejudices. They treat desis the way they treat humans.

Exactly....its only us indians who treat other Indians badly. Whether in india or overseas. Thats why many believe, "It is better to be a second rate citizen in a foreign country than a second rate citizen in your own!!!" That was the reason for the brain drain.
I boarded a flight from Australia last year, and had a stopover in Bangkok. From Aus to Bangkok, service was good, air-hostess was giving extra glass of drinks cheerfully as 90% of the people were whites. Then came Bangkok, I changed plane and now 80% of the people were desis. And their attitude was pathetic, what you could notice was many were trying to connect their cellphones, loud conversations, and giving a full eye stare to air-hostesses. Not wearing seat belt after many announcements and man you could notice the change in environment and also service changed. Air-hostesses didn't come as frequently just gave food and were refusing requests for more drinks and you could just feel that I am in mumbai local train. As someone who travels frequently abroad I have many more stories...
