Why r always employees labelled as job hoppers..?
by Gautam Bansal on Mar 22, 2007 07:50 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Today's is the employees market...there's a dearth of skilled people in the market..
So if employees dominate the market and switch jobs..then its nothing wrong in it ...man its all the free play of demand and supply....
what about the time when cos. were throwing out the people out of jobs without any notice period..( i m talking about the the great IT slowdown last year..!!)

so guys tell those people talking about job hopping,....that its nothing wrong , rather its simple economics..!

I could recall one incident that happened sometime back during HR interview. The lady asked me how soon I could join if I was given an offer. As I told her that I had two month's notice period, the lady went on to give a long lecture on why it doesn't make any sense for a company to keep an employee for two months after he resigns, how it affects the other employees, about negative energy it spreads, why there should be trust and mutual respect between employee and employer, why it should be like a family, the wonderful HR practises they have in their company etc etc and asked me to talk to my current employer and make it two weeks.

I asked her what the notice period is in their company. After a little bit of hesitation and beating around the bush, she replied that it's three months for a person of my seniority.

In a fix...please help..
by abhishek verma on Mar 21, 2007 11:23 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Hi, I was in a very good designation in my earlier company. Now I accepted this offer from another company A and have joined them just 2 weeks back. Now I have an offer from a MNC CMM level 5 co. to join them. It is exactly what I want and I really want to join them. Should I tell them that I have already joined company A a fortnight ago or shall I hide this fact and straightaway join there with my previous employers releiving letters. I know terminating my employment at company A would be problematic but I can manage that. Only thing is that I would like to join the company with my honest details, but my friends say that if you tell them abt Co. A, it will create wrong impression and you might loose the job. What should I do?

Hi Abhishek..
I think you should tell the Company A some problem at your native place so that you can keep this job in hand for at least 15 days and join the Comapny B straighforward.Dont try to be HarishChandra as it will always go against you.
If you find the things are not upto your expectations with Company B you can go back to Company A.
You will have backup with you.
This will be a witty ploy and win win situation for you.
Let me known what u did at -

Guys, I understand that all of you have been trying to give him the best piece of advice. But somehow I feel it might not be a good idea to join company B without telling A. It's certainly not to do with morality etc. but it might create a legal problem for him and he might end up loosing both the jobs.

This is because company B is going to ask him to sign a document saying that he won't work for another company while working for B. In case they get to know about the ploy, they can ask him to leave.

Second issue would be conflict of interest, if there is any. Company A might might file a legal notice against company B for accessing it's confidential information using unlawful means (that's him), in that case company B would get into trouble. he would certainly loose his job. And this would have adverse affect on his career.

I strongly feel that company B won't let him join without a releaving letter from company A to avoid these kind of troubles.

Don't hide anything. Go and tell company B that you have joined company A, but you always wanted to join B. It would work out well. But be ready with satishfying answers for the uncomfortable questions. Questions like "what if company C gives you an offer, would you quit B?", "why did you join A, when you always wanted B?" etc will be asked.
May be it's a personal matter, but I believe one shouldn't join a company just because it's a MNC or it's CMM level five. Go by what you get out of this deal.

Dear friend, a couple of years back i was in the same spot. I left a job in hand, in the hope of landing another job in another city. It took me 9 whole months to get a job. It was extremely frustrating and i was beginning to lose my mind and even hoped that i would get run down by a bus or something. I was a bachelor that time. It seems that you are either a married man or you have people who depend on you; so, in your situation, it would be a really really bad move if you quit your current job. Bad is actually an understatement...suicidal would be appropriate.
As for you not being happy in hyderabad, do something to spice up your life man. Go for a nice evening walk by Hussain sagar lake..better yet, why dont you "patao" some lady (if you are a bachelor)

Hi , Zunaid,
Man ,you are a Chartered Accountant and that too in Hyderabad , at least for the present. India is hot , there is dearth of CA's. The demand is roughly double the supply.
Man, have patience. But do not forget to look around in Mumbai. Try your best while you are in Hyabd. Take action rather than thinking day and night. No problem, CA's are by nature lazy, they need marketing and managerial skills for which ICAI is now looking for. Better late than never.

I think you should first get a job in Mumbai and then leave your current job. I don't know much about mumbai, so can't comment on how easy or difficult to get a CA job there. Never do the mistake of leaving this job and then trying to get one in mumbai. You should think about your dependents before thinking about anything else. But again, it's my perspective.

Hi Zunaid,

After reading your message, I guess you have some personal problem in Hyderabad...

Try to tackle that problem first, if not divert your attention from that problem and things will start looking green...

As many of the friends suggested, it is NOT a right move to leave the job on hand and try for a different one and that too in a different city...

Companies try to take advantage of people with NO job on hand and try to give lesser pay...and you too can't demand...

So, have patience and cheer up...life is not always the same...there are bull and bear phases always...think smart and start applying in Mumbai while being in Hyd...try arranging telephonic interviews, and if required arrang face-to-face interviews on weekends...by requesting Mumbai companies...it works and you might end up in a very good job in amchi Mumbai :)

Take a objective decision
by Paramesh Waran on Mar 21, 2007 06:50 PM  Permalink

Always be objective in your decision. You owe no misplaced loyalty to your organisation or to organisation A or B or C. Any one employing you or offering you a job is trading a set of perks and a remuneration package for the perceived capbility you bring to teh job. Your employer or prospective employer is in business with a profit motive and calculates that the net expenditure he incurs on you fetches him a profit at teh end of the month. He would not otherwise employ you. If you are a high cost employee you can be sure that you will be one of the first to go when the business hits a rough patch, invariably due to mismanagement or market conditions. At such times all concepts of loyalty go out the window.

Always keep your self interest in mind whenever you decide any thing of this nature. You have to look out for yourself. You are working in a finite time frame within which you have to achieve your objectives. If your objective is to own an asset base of say, 1 crore rupees by the time you are 35 and jumping jobs gets you there by the time you are 32, my suggestion would be to always go for the lower time frame. Not only do you get there earlier but also, the inflation factor will further depreciate your wealth as time goes by. If your objective is to retire at 60 and you manage to meet all your dreams by 50 why not quit and take life easy thereon. Everything in nature finds its own level and, if a person is in need of a job conversely a job is also in need of a person.

Dear,
A known devil is much better than unknown god. Reaction to the initial love is very danger and it can harm you. Because the other strated loving ( B) does not mean that we hate the first one (A). Make sure that B is very good in all respects and then only take a decision.

I did join company B
by Madhulika Rao on Mar 21, 2007 05:36 PM  Permalink

This is the exact thing what happened to me couple of months back. I got an offer from A, accepted it, then got the offer from B, and it was absolutely what I wanted at that point.
I was initially having a lot of doubts about the 'saying yes and then backing off' thing.
But then the thought struck that, any company wants 100% from their employess. If I am forever thinking about what could have happened, I wouldnt be very happy at al.
So I called up the HR of company A, told him some reason for not joining (didnt mention company B), apologised for it, explained the situation to the consultant who was the middleman.
After clearing my conscience, I finally called up company B and took up their job. The whole thing took less than 4 hours of serious thenking, and I have never regretted it

This is a right decision u have taken to stay in the old company just think twice again because for money u r thinking that u r getting now also in same company & ur familiar with working style of all of them

Hi Subrat,

It is common practise that companies won't give the same respect to the employees who have put down the papers in the past...

Even if they try to convince you with bigger pay hike, gracefully decline it, don't argue and just quit the place with all the respect. In future, you might want to contact them for references.

Never continue in the same company once you put down the papers...This is the golden rule...talk to your trusted seniors (not in the same project ;-) obviously ) and they too will tell you the same thing...

All the best...

Yes I too agree.
Once you have resigned its difficult to get the same respect later on as your company may have some short term requirements where you may be crutial but once that is done you will see the difference and further during next appraisals you would not get any loyalty benefits.
Hence Its always better to stick to resignation.

I fully disagree with this sentimental decision.
Everybody is doing their business, but in Indian corporate imotions are sometimes heavy on profession.Putting down papers is a crime. You are a free sould and you have all rights to take an independent decision.Your decision should be justifiable. When you are putting down your papers , you are most likely resigning due to certain miseries which you think , can be resolved in new employment.
Discuss all those things with your current employer, if they address your problems and give you a better terms of employment, and it is accepted you , then there is no harm in taking the resignation back.
All decisions should be healthy professional decisions and emotion should not control the decision making process.
I have always given priority to my existing organization and I am happily working in my company 1.5 years after putting down the papers.

Some how I am not fully agree with you. I have a situation when I got a offer from some B co and resigned from my current co. Then suddenly my Big Boss appeared in the picture and he given me more hike than what my new employer was offering.. as i was working in this co. from last 2 year and they hiked my salary more than B so.. i decided to recalled my resignation.. everything gone fine for 1 year but somehow i know that they take my resignation thing very seriously and it affected me in getting envolved with new project and salary hike... and loyality too. so I must say ones you put the paper don't look back.... because days are never going to be same. It's a professional life ... and you'r co. is employing you because you'r generating profit for co.. not due to some emotional thing..
