If someone is dedicated to a company and slog for more than 8 hrs a day, then I say they are fools. Because they are wasting their time and energy for nothing. Slogging is not only the reason why people spend less time with family, in my case, I work as a contractor and I need to constantly update my skills to compete in the job market. So, there is lot of constant reading and practicing, which also disrupts the personal life. I stopped doing it now and started concentrating on my family!!! It feels great and everyone is happy :)
Well, I will not give u a rosy picture. Expats who are working as a Lobor are working hell lot of time but the other ways -the expats who are working as a White Collar Employee are very much enjoying the life here. First of all, it is a 48 hrs a week job, 2 days of off. Work Time - 7 am to 4 Pm or 8 am to 5 pm. Give ample time for family. No Work pressure. We got lots of mall here, no cinema hall, living condition is cheap in compariosn to rest of the world, tax free. You saves lots of money.Ramadan is full of enjoy month here. In Ramadan 24 hrs week work done considered as 48 hrs a week. Here there is always tomorrow, u dont have to do the job in haste here. Here Family things always come first. Your Family is important here. Being an Islamic Country and with immense Oil, it is a great place to work on. Safest Country in the World, nobody sees ur wife and daughter with a wolf eyes. For women, this is the safest country. All Western Expats who live here are very happy, 1.6 million Indians Stay here.

C'mon Zakir, you make it sound all rosy - which is not the reality. Every place has it's advantages and disadvantages. Saudi Arabia is not a heaven or the best place for all. There are many abuse cases, non-payment of salaries, lack of oppurtunities, slack environment etc. Majority of the westerners in gulf are seniors earning moolah in twilight years.
Yes it is tax free and a big advantage. Safe place, I doubt. Legal trouble is very unfortunate for one. What about errant sponsors?

What you are saying may be true to a greater extend as far as White Color professionals are concerned.
But I generally heard that Middle East, you have 6 days a week culture and almost 12 Hrs a day especially for Indians... I may be wrong.
If what you say is true then it is good.
In Today's world, people slowly will move towards quality than quantity (I mean money). This higher growth rate, high profitability and unstable jobs will not lost long.
Wife "You have no time left for me and my kids. I am getting
out of this relationship"
"My salary is 10 lakhs how i can settle for lesser job even if
it eats up all my 24 hours.."
The so called job is no longer a job.Its called SLOG. Indians greedy for money they had never seen once they get attracted to the lust stick to it. "career manics" so called can just do anything for their
career. They forget to enjoy things of life like "Listening to bird
chirping, watching a sunrise, walk in the park etc. By the time they reach 40 body has degraded to larger extent. All kind of diseases have set in "High blood pressure, diabetes, headaches, backache".
Next 20 years are spent in trying to manage this ailments and then person dies reduced to ashes to be immersed in
ganges the last journey.
What all this for ? If you can answer please mail me at subodh2001@rediffmai.com
Hi, my name Amen and I am a Christian born in India. I agree wid u. We Indians get carried away with the lust 4 money - but i can tell u it makes a lousy god. I am only 1 yr into my career but i am satisfied where i am and i have gr8 trust in Jesus (God) to provide 4 me - watever i need as it comes along. It removes so much stress out of my life. HE is able to do more than we can ask or think - why, b'coz he created the heavens and earth and all that's in them - can't He provide our little bitty needs? He feeds the birds everyday and u never saw a worried bird wondering how to pay the rent on its nest? If He can take care of them, He can take care of us b'coz we r more valuable to Him than many birds.
All blessings: our family, our job, our health are all blessings from God. So we should stop worrying and cast all cares on Jesus who loved the whole world and died for our sins - to forgive us and save us. Jesus came to give us abundant life - to enjoy! Not to slog forever and be depressed.
What good news! There is hope to be found in God so we can all cheer up. Hope this answers ur questions. U can write back to me at: amen_irwin@yahoo.co.in
Both are important. But today Proffessionals are forced to concentrate on their job for money and power. Otherwise somebody else will grab that position. In return, they get money, power and loose personnel life, health and will become a patient of high BP, cholestrol, heart attack. Then they start thinking of yoga etc. But their children, family everything will be spoilt by that time and money they earned will be used for treatment. After all, they may not reach the retirement age or if they reaches, they will be alone in the life as their family will have no attachments with them. This all is because, MNC's and their people counts ones potential in hours of working especially after office hours and holidays. This must be changed and people must understand that it is not the man hours they put but the quality of work they done which actually counts. Thus MNC's will get more reliable, energetic people and can keep the attrition rate very law. This is totally my personal point of view.
Present generation Indians who are working for White masters (with NRI pimps) are becoming 24 X 7 slaves in A?C rooms.
Unless they take up arms and demand reasonable working conditions, they are bound to loose on the long run and the impact will not only restricted to their lives alone but across the society/community and eventually the country.
Only free and relaxed mind can really be more productive and innovative. If employees are constantly kept under pressure for monthyl/weekly/daily targets which are mostly mundate in nature, they are bound to have no social life.
The most important reason is present generation do not value hobbies, extra-curricular activities (beyond pubs and multiplexes)and develop interest in career development. For them having a cool mobile phone, cute girlfriend, jolly weekend and fat pay cheque!

cool mobile phone, cute girlfriend, jolly weekend and fat pay chequ -is all that counts!
You must be a loser with none of these and you are jealous!
In shool we read about the industrial revolution and its side effects. The industrial bosses made the workers work long hours and paid them low wages. Then came social reformers who came up with the Labour Act or so where by they laid down certain rules. One of it was that the work shift should be for 8 hours only. If a worker is made to work for more than 8 hours he is to be paid overtime. This was exploited by the labour forces by demanding overtime to get more wages. So the boses have promoted the workers and made them Officers. Now the so called Officers are doing the work of workers for long hours beyound the 8 hours and are not benifited by the Labour Act or so. So we need new generation Social reformers who will bell the cat and bring life work balance in the life of all Officers / workers. Till then our jobs will be causing our personal lives to suffer and we will be working long hours at offices for low wages.

I dont think it 'll ever work. We are country of excess population and cut throat competition. If one is not willing to work for eight hours, employer will always find another who would most happily work more for less.
Such social reforms, which were a precursor to communism, worked in those countries as they did not face population explosion. Moreover, businesses will remain businesses only with the sole motive of profit making. As a result of strict labor laws in "developed" countries, they are merrily outsourcing work to places where labor will work far more than eight hours. If India implements strict laws, other countries such as Vietnam, China, Philippines would start to get more work offshored to their countries.

Most of the Mallu companies in TN force TN workers to work more than 8 hours per day while Mallu workers (who do not work normally) in Kerala enjoy 8 non-working everyday!

They work hard only if the employer is a Mallu! Have you seen them working under non-Mallu setup?
For example if theur boss is not a Mallu they talk all bad things and try to indulge in petty politics;
I believe mental/physical health is the biggest thing that suffers. If we can maintain good health inspite of the job pressures, then it means we are striking a balance.
Health and friendship are two things whose importance is understood only when they are lost.
Find friends who trust you and who can understand your job pressures and hence are friends in all circumstances.
For some people just an e-mail will do.I think once has to manage time to get enough room for little time to be given to friends
For people staying away from their parents and family, its rather comfortable staying at the workplace than at home. One needs to weigh out different priorities in life and strike a right balance in personal and professional life.

Make it a point not to work more than 8 hrs a day. Get out of the office sharply at 5.30-6.00 PM you can find 100s of opportunities outside your work place. One thing you may do is invest in higher education.

Wrong and grossly incorrect!! Get a life. There is more to office. Develop wholesome hobbies that will keep your mind active and alert and will keep you busy while relaxing you. Take time for exercise and yoga. Meet people, travel within and out of your country. Office is 8 or 9 hours! the rest is YOUR time. Use it wisely.
