CVV number is a unique way that helps the merchant understand that the card is genuine and it belongs to the person who is swiping it at her/his outlet. Striking that off could lead to a lot of confusion.

CVV has no role in POC transactions. Subbu sh's suggestion makes a lot of sense. Just strike off the CVV completely from the back of the card - Then, if the card is lost, or handed over to waiters in restaurant, they cant see the CVV number and cant make any online transactions. Only the owner (who remembers the CVV) can make online transactions. The merchants have nothing to do with CVV - they swipe the card on the EDC and thats it. No confusion

if thats the case, then why does bank print on the credit card itself. It can be sent to the end users seperately via post like a ATM password.
