i remember a scene from a tamil movie where vivek brags about auto drivers by saying they will blink left indicator..put out right hand and then drive straight through. Lying through our teeth is our national pastime...fear of this axe holder becoming an actual reality often sobers up the voter after his intoxicating experience in participating in the greatest democratic exercise in the world(ha ha!!)...no wonder he says to ndtv congress:aajtak bjp: timesnow commies: and actually ended up voting for the independent!! i remember my grandma grumbling when electronic voting machines came into play..she felt cheated as that bloody contraption did not allow her to make her vote invalid..which was her silly pleasure in every election!!
Jokes apart. Exit polls are kind of holistic approach taken towards which candidate is gonna get the bacon to eat. A small percentage of the voters are interviewed, and I can personally vouch that no person with no axe stood behind the exit pollster interviewing the voter, and try to come up with a data of who is heading or losing the elections. Its more than often inaccurate and that even the pollsters agree.

Interesting to know what the father of all exit polls psephologist Prannoy Roy has to say on this. Of course, he is an industrialist now - all credit to his exit poll origins!
