Shashank - I can help you on certain places - Twice an article had appeared about Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Rediff . I had given exhaustive comments on both occasions. I have saved the comments from Rediff " My page " and it is saved in my old laptop or old hard disks. I can, if you wish , also cover OOTY and certain other places as armchair travelogue - Regards Edison John

Some places off the beaten path are Sarahan, Baspa,Kinnaur,Sangla,Naggar and Chitkul in HP, Jeolikote, Mukteshwar,Chamba,Binsar,Ranikhet etc. in Uttaranchal. I have been to these places and believe you me, they are preferable anyday to Mussorie,Shimla,Nainital,Manmali and other better known but inferior spots. For deatils of other places in Rajasthan, J&K,HP & Uttaranchal, you may contact me by mailing me to 'advocatesumeer@rediffmail.com'. Regards.

DARJILING SIKKIM GANGTOK is also worth to visit so do not neglect 7 brother states also if you want to see EAST INDIA COMPANY EMPIRE how BRITs were?
North India is full of places to enjoy honeymoon. There are lot of tourist places like Shimla , Manali , Mousrie ( all are 120 to 300 KM ) from City Beutiful -Chandigarh - my birth place. These are best suited during Sept - Dec.( Off season) and March to May. July - sept. it is a rainy season. Dec.- Feb severe winter .
But these are places attract lot of people in summer ( Tourist Season). Booking and arranging of Taxi for local sight seeing is again a problem.
These places are well connected by road with Delhi and Chandigarh.
Apart from these , Chail , Kasuli , Dharmsala are few other small another hill stations in North . These are quite and small places with no major tourist rush.
Apart from these Mandi, Rawalsar , Chamba are few small towns with lot of scenic beauti . These are located within 50-60 KM from major tourist attractions of North India.
Hope this will help you in knowing a little bit about North . You are wellcome to ask anything . My mail address id baggars@rediffmail.com
I had been reading the article on Mussoorie and believe u me, I was mighty surprised at the omission of Shillong. It's always like this only. The N.E. of India gets no mention except if some guy from North India gets hurt there (cud try reading killed) or for all the wrong reasons only.
Like I said, so I shot of this letter to the editor asking him about his failure to put Shillong on the map. Also, Shillong is a pretty old town and the Brits had come therea long time ago and made it some sort of provincial capital, I believe> Infact, the area in and around Shillong is called the Scotland of the East by the Brits.
But our Know-it-alls have only Info on Darj, OOty, Mussoorie, Shimla. C/mon you editors and travel writers__ it's time u looked beyond your noses. There's also life elsewhere. And u could bring the N.E. closer by writing about the scenic beauty more than all the blood and gore stories. Right Guys!

I fully agree. Not much research is done before writing such articles about flea-bitten places like Mussorie. Eminently better places in the vicinity like Dhanaulti, Chamba etc. are ignored.

Mussoorie is lot more polluted nowadays. To complement pollution, smell of horse dropping exists. No Parking, Traffic jams and what not. Gone are the old mussoorie days

Just see denuded forest on southern slopes of Dalhousie & SW of Ooty...like excessive mining is being carried out.
Have you ever gone to Shillong. If not I will suggest you to go with your family and enjoy the natural climate. I have gone gangtok, darjeeling. The climate is only for Kanchanjangah hill. But you will get only hills in shillong not ice.
Natural beauty of this famous hill station has been spoilt a great deal by the wreckless construction of commercial buildings along the mall road.If you climb the famous gun hill located in the heart of this small city you will be disappointed after reaching the top when you see that all the natural scenery of the Himalayas have been totally eclipsed by the cluster of shops encircling the entire plateau.Only a thin strip of land covering an area of hardly 15 feet X 10 feet has been left vacant from where you can get a restricted view of the Himalayas.Thans to the MDDA i.e. Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority who have allowed such wreckless construction of buildings/ shops at the top of Gun Hill and and along the Mall road. Hotels are abundant. One has to stroll along the Mall and walk up to Kulri and go on enquiring the tariff until you get an accommodation that suits your pocket and requirement. Those at Kulri are cheaper as compared to the ones located along the Mall with the exception of the Hotel managed by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited which, although located along the Mall, is comparitively much cheaper than other similar hotels. ajay kumar dehradun

Hey Moderator,
It's really a pity that u shot down my reply to kanyal's blatant report of the N.E. states being non-receptive to the sovereignity of India and that people are aligned to Communist China, when the truth is there are more communists elsewhere in the country than in the N.E.
and yet when I reported kanyals abusive write-up, you chose not to clsoe it as an abusive piece of writing.
Could I ask u a frank question. Are you also so biased and jaundiced and so ill-informed.
Moderator's have to be unbiased, and iyt is my request that if you cannot do a job well you better quit.

Dear Akshay, I do admit there is problem of millitancy in north-east, but in our country there is similar problem in Kashmir and what about naxal problem in Jharkhand, Bihar and so many other states.Even then people go to these places.I will again say it's nice place to go, though I wish the situation over there improves and the people of north-east understands the futility of millitancy.

In fact all hill stations have their own appeal, different landscape & people. Today's tourists are aloso looking for virgin spots and simple tribes. Adding up all I would like to request enthuciasts to plan some trips

avoid over croweded hill stations as you spend your savings to enjoy the tour so select carefully hill station MEGHALAYA is also better option as no tour operator enters 7 brother states?
I am jut wondering if any one ever visit the Northeast..much further to the eastern side of Darjeeling? The north eastern states are the loveliest places to be on earth. the climate is perfect during summer, the sceneries are breath taking. How I wish that it gets connected to the mainland in the news

I agree with you Benjamin! I went for my 2 week honey to Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. I cannot emphsise enough that the beauty is awesome and breath taking with those frozen lakes and the deep forests! You really need some local help to take you to the hidden paradise in those locales, not the regular tour operator packages who make fool of the customers!

Yes you are absolutely right. Even i have been to assam, meghalaya and Arunachal. Although arunchal is not well developed and takes some real effort to reach there (getting the permit made etc.). But, believe me, its worth it. You would love the virgin mountains and the waterfalls that you come across while on the way. Overall if you are looking forward to a place away from the normal hustle bustle north-east is the right place.
