Degrees or work experiance
by Suresh Royal on Oct 31, 2006 09:48 AM  Permalink

I vote for Practical Experiance. Education with experiance gives a finishing touch. Experiance is the greatest teacher. Dhirubhai Ambani's example is a finest example as a most successful Businessman. Education without experiance is bound to be useless.
But experiance gained (without education) will certainly not be a waste.

Degrees or work experience
by Teja on Oct 31, 2006 09:35 AM  Permalink

Higher degree sometimes helps in getting instant benefits like : much better start for a fresher, good increment for a experience resource etc. In general i would like to say degree is only helpful if you are a employee ... But if you have your own business .. than degree doesn't matter much ... your vision, risk taking capability and hard work count the most ...
thanks

education
by sujeesh on Oct 31, 2006 09:33 AM  Permalink

A Degree is a structured education where you learn a lot by being taught,by reading , by discussing. It is more of a self development tool where you also learn to live in society and discipline yourself to the needs of the society apart from learning the subject of interest in a therotical way not knowing the importance or implication of the subject in the future.
Work experience with no formal education at all is a risk worth avoided. One needs to be taught certain aspects which can then be integrated and perfected during work.Education alone per se is of no good if it is not interpolated in to work.
People like Dirubai have come up with sheer determination. No power can between willpower and tyhe hunger to succeed. As Nizzim Eziekel penned "Success is counted sweetest by those who never secceed."

Degree and Experience
by Sony on Oct 31, 2006 09:30 AM  Permalink

A degree certainly helps. How many Dhirubhai Ambanis are there compare to other successful people with formal education? And if a degree is not useful, why did Dhirubhai send his sons to collage and for heigher education abroad ? Both Mukesh and Anil Ambani could have worked in his empire from their childhood days and have not wasted years in collage. Work experience is important. But if you have a formal degree, you get some knowledge before you get the experience. If you do not have the degree (Means formal education as per my understanding, not a pecie of paper from a university) you will have to spend hours to solve a problem, which you will never consider as a problem at all if you have the theoritical knowledge.
So I do believe that theoritical education is important to get better work experience.
Theoritical education is like childhood where you get everything readymade,(knowledge is given to you), practical work experience is teenage where you like to explore things,(Work experience you get without any degree). If you knwo how wonderful the childhood is, you can enjoy the teens and then become a good adult. (A good professional)

degree vs work experience
by Bipin on Oct 31, 2006 09:28 AM  Permalink

It is said that theoritical understanding without practical experience is always better than practical experience without theoritical understanding(and both the things coupled together are best. The critics of the present educational system say that todays degree holder is not necessarily an educated person. It is also said that real life experiencxe is a very good school(only its fees are exhorbitant). But the critism of the formal educational system also applies to the practical experience i.e. a person who has sufficient exposure to the practical experience does not necessarily learn something from it. A degree or a practical experience gathered without any purpose behind it are equally useless.

Degree or work experience
by Apram Singh on Oct 31, 2006 08:20 AM  Permalink

In my view it all depends on the choosen career of the individual. For example being in the Publication trade my Engineering Degree is of great help to me, as I'm publishing books for the Engineering courses. Also the work experience which I have gained is helping me a lot. So in my case its a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

To an extent yes!
by akash on Oct 31, 2006 08:16 AM  Permalink

yes..according to me degrees do matter a lot. If a engineering grad is from reputed colleges like IITs/BITS or a management student is from IIMs/ISB he certainly stands a much better change than other college students.
The thing however to note here is that these students generally DO have more experience in their fields..For example a engg grad from IITs/BITS would certainly have spent atleast 3 months in case of an IIT and 7 1/2 months in case of BITS in the industry. It is the value added coz of the college too which matters and reflects in the degree.

Degrees or Work Experience
by M. Thennarasu on Oct 31, 2006 07:33 AM  Permalink

Degrees & Work Experience both are very much important. So we've to work hard to get a degree while working. All the companies has to give the permission to study while working.
