Education and Experience
by Ravikant on Oct 31, 2006 04:31 PM  Permalink

I do not consider that the issue begs a debate because without education there can be no worthwhile development of the self or of the spirit.Experience is a very nebulous word because every individual undergoes a unique experience. Only the useful portion of it can be replicated for securing one's living.
Education in the broadest sense is refined and formalised experience of the collective memory of mankind. It is for this reason alone that it is priceless and rightly valued in civilised societies.
Mr Dhirubhai, the man who achieved so much in his lifetime has never decried education for, he gave his sons the best of education and his rich legacy.
In today's complex world it has become impossible to function adequately without proper education.
To say that work experience alone matters is to shirk one's responsibility to make our children worthy and useful citizens of our land.

Are degrees more important than work experience?
by Sanjit Banerjee on Oct 31, 2006 02:13 PM  Permalink

Degrees really contribute as Pedigrees in human life. In the social scenario, its an weapon for mimicking. You are nowhere in social standard unless you arrange degree ( by studying or copying or cheating whatever means). When you study which is said and accepted by others , you copy that funda in your memory. Time comes when that funda is changed , you delete the old and copy the new in your memory and so on. Now yesterday you earned the degree with a wrong funda, but nobody will snatch your degree, rather you have become a puppet.

Its only you do physically, learn the subject in and out by heart and then go on with your experiments to judge and analyse and try to invent new things for which there is no limit.

In a nut shell Degrees are mere copying, whereas proper Work experiences are learning in depth to perfection.

Blend of both
by vijay on Oct 31, 2006 01:58 PM  Permalink

In my opinion ,perfect blend of both is important to build one's career. For Example, prior experience would add value if you try to pursue MBA degree,on the other hand M.tech to some extent need not require experience.Degrees make u reach the interview table but experience play a vital role in getting recruited.

Degrees or work experience?
by Mahesh on Oct 31, 2006 01:49 PM  Permalink

I believe higher education as well as work experience is equally important. It should be left to individuals to decide what is a best fit.

Hands on and real time experience is as valuable as in depth and pure theoretical knowledge. So an ideal professional should be equipped with both the weapons.

Eventually it depends how you apply whatever you have learnt.

Degrees or work exp?
by sampath on Oct 31, 2006 01:46 PM  Permalink

It is the domain knowledge and the working capability which brings up the Leader. I hope the present scenario in our college doesn't provide the much desired domain knowledge. Still the labs and books collectively hold the fair contributions for domain knowledge. Hence we got Infosys narayana murty. But this is not a general principle.

Degrees or work experience?
by vaibhav on Oct 31, 2006 01:42 PM  Permalink

I dont think degrees are given more importance than experience. Degrees only serve as an entry into the required field, after that its all your hardwork, your knowledge and skills that counts. Degrees does matter to certain extent, but is not given more importance than experience. You can say both are incomplete without the other.
Degree does'nt value much if u dont have any experience (just used as a way to enter into the required field here). Also, experience is not of much value if you dont have a degree (this refers to the knowledge you gain in getting the degree). So both the things need to be there, not just one.

So, i dont think degrees are valued more importance than experience. Even if u had a degree from not a good institute..and u have to ability to do things what the employer wants you to do. I don't find any reason why he should not hire you.
