IIM - salary
by anup on Mar 22, 2006 02:50 PM  Permalink

I wonder why nobody tells the world the lowest salary offered in any of the IIMs...!!! And the media is always happy abt converting dollars and pounds to rupees to simply amaze the people!
Even in rediff, I have seen headlines screaming 'Freshers with big pay packets'..!! And if one takes the pain to read thru the article, one may find that the 'Fresher' already had had years of experience! The fact is that even most of the engineering postgraduates from US universities get similar salary packages!! Even in India, one can find guys with simple B.Sc and a MBA from distance education, earning more than a lakh per month in some of the MNCs after three or four years of experience!!

IIM salaries
by Nikhil on Mar 22, 2006 02:45 PM  Permalink

This is only hype given by media , why dont we talk about the actual employment conditions in India .Few students get a good job and we all start crying and jumping on that , I would suggest to go to small places in India and see the job situation , see the frustrations among the young generations who come out of small institutions and struggling to get a normal job, why dont we discuss on increasing job opportunities in all the sectors , Is India limited to Metros only or education limited to IIM/IIT only , Media should focus on the real problems we are still facing lot of problems , unemployment is still a big problem for us .

Dear Sir,

We are very much depressed to note such a high salary where as all our staff working more than 30 years getting very poor salary i.e only 4 to 5 thousand per month. Govt has also not done any thing for old employees of private firms.

If only people knew mathematics!!!
by Rajiv on Mar 22, 2006 02:38 PM  Permalink

I am both anguished as well as amazed to see the mathematics-ignorance of the media around us...Salaries can be looked at as samples from a population of salaries (and that's why average salary means mean of the population of salaries)...
What my learned friends, uncles, aunts and sometimes close relatives fail to understand is that the very high pay packet salaries in day 0 belong to an entirely different population of salaries...so it is wrong to say that the mean salary at IIM A is say 10Lakhs...imagine with a few sky rocketing salaries as high as that the mean has been distorted to 10L..we shud be talking separately abt median..because it makes more sense but unfortunately even the IIMs in their bid to show each other down don't really care abt it...
The IIM grads who get these paypackets are definitely great and thus commenting on their deserving the pay packet is something I wont do but it is also true that sometimes the best brains (by ranks in the batch) also end up without a day 0 offer...
I don't know when this mad rambling abt salaries is going to end but the sooner the better for the comparatively poor Indian job once a time batchmates of theirs...

Excellent Observation! @ Rashmi
by Anwesh Adhikari on Mar 22, 2006 02:34 PM  Permalink

Rashmi you have written a wonderful article!!! The media is giving unnecessary attention to the Management Salaries, due to which the youth as well as the parents look at it as the ultimate career option!!! These are not good signs for the society on the long run...as people get more and more money minded...passion will erase and restlessness will prevail. The reason behind not too many Management Graduate making to the top is a confirmation to the fact that most of them loose interest and realize that their path of life was somewhere else!!!!
