In india IIT is really a brand name..But can any of you find the name of IIT in the top ranking universities of the world list? IIT has no place.. IISc (Bngalore) is in the list between 60 to 100), where as so many universities from China has made place in the top ranking universities list in the world. Sometime I think that what is the achievement of IITs ? It is very shameful that our Railway board members are going abroad to take technical support to run Bullet Train in India then I don't know what IITians are doing here, when they claim themselves as prime Engineers of our country.....
Currently, I am studying ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING in JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY( KOLKATA,WEST BENGAL )…….This year I gave IIT 2014….and I am getting METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING IN [ IIT BHU(VARANASI) ]……Please help me……Will I accept it? I want some suggestion
approximately all iit offer dept change for top 2-3% so striving for top 2-3% in other institutes like nit ,iiits n then also to excel in interview 4 top notch companies is equivalent or far more less then taking any course chemical/biotech/textile/paper/mining/any msc at iits hope u could consider it in ur next article
although I"m not quite experienced in such matters, but I too would like to add a few tit bits of my own.I am currently in a similar position having cleared IIT JEE 2011 but not with a good rank. but having studied a bit of literature of the IIT curriculum, I think it is advisable to go for IIT even if it means to enter in iit with a non conventional branch. there you have the provision of changing your stream after the 2nd semester based on your peromance. I would personally work hard in that stream and then qualify to change my stream than work hard the entire year for JEE again. and even if I am forced to study in that non conventional branch, I'm sure that by building passion for that subject , I can excel in that field too. In todays world it is not only the IT proessionals who have the best packages in the world.

the auther of this article is not correct at few points: 1. she has assumed that people who have got jobs in software companies google etc. are only successful persons in the world. 2.it is fact that IT companies are performing very well now a days, but there are plenty of other fields ( in govt. and private domain ) where one can exel. 3.being a iitian, i feel that one can only have better attitude and broad vision by studying in a good institution, rest depends upon indivisual's capability.
"When Chandan visited the Roorkee campus, it looked disappointing." - I wonder if this is a figment of Rashmi's imagination and a fictitious statement. I am from Roorkee in the days when it was not an IIT and even then its campus (as well as the institution) was one of the best in India. Its one of the oldest institutions in the country. She does not seem to have done her homework well.
As for the article I am of the opinion that one should aim for the branch. I for one did not get my branch in the first attempt and after completing my BSc in mathematics I applied again and got to do my engineering in the branch I wanted !
Although it is true that IIT is an established brand name, its utility is limited. The biggest factor that decides an individual's success is his pursuit of success throughout life. If the concentration of such people is more in IITs, so be it. Educational institutions in India are temples of rote learning. In the decades of existense of IITs, I dindt hear a single IITian doing any breakthrough research and winning accolades. A number of them are doing mediocre jobs, and some totally screwed up their lives. IIMs are worse. Why a person needs to go to IIM to do regular jobs I cant understand.
I though I should also comment on the subject with me being in a similar position during my JEE time. That time too many ppl had counselled me to take up a better branch in some other institute but I never had any doubt about joining an IIT.A classmate of mine had a slightly higher JEE rank but he opted for Comp.Sci at another top Engg Coll .Today as we both pass out I have a starting salary that is more than twice of his.
What most ppl forget is that just because as a 17 year old you liked computers(who dosent?) does meat you will end up liking Computer Engineering which is an entirely different ballgame.
But what you get at IIT is unparalled elsewhere, weather it be the flexiblity in choosing subjects, the great extracurricular environment and last but not the least the life long brand name.
During placments companies come because of the IIT Brand and from then on all branches are equal.
waht matters are your academics, extracurriculrs and things like spoken english. And every year you end up seeing ppl with ranks of 1500+ in JEE beating the guys who had scored under 100 ranks.

Gyaan Guru,
Well IIT is a place where being a mechanical engineer, u also get to get too good in CSE or EE. Course sturcture is such that you can choose audit courses every semester in ant discipline of your choice outside ur core which I think wont be available in other "good ?" institutes. Also, the level of facilities and exposure in IIT is unparallel and yes, IITians are best in every field. IIT is nt just a good initial launch pad but a life time experience. It is the culture at IIT which molds an individual to a natural leader and not just the education.

a comp science is comp science at end of the day otherwise google or Facebook wouldn't have restricted other branches and out of 6 rounds in facebook 4 are in depth comp science ...and i hope no branch in any IIT will make their own stream secondary to give comp science job in facebook to their department students . thats not the intention and neither that is so easy . the ones who did this landed up being 6 and 7 pointers and couldnt get in any Ivey US university for an MS program as the GPA in their own subject was pathetic
