Hi, I have around 8 yrs of experience in IT industry in india. Planning to do PhD in a reputed US university. I would like to know how much helpful my experience will be in getting admission, provided I get a decent GRE score. Also, please comment on the very idea of PhD after work experience. -- Raja.

With your experience, you must have learnt time management well. This will come in handy in PhD research. However, the approach on solving a problem is different in PhD compared to work. You have do indepth research in solving a problem. Whereas in work, any solution is good as long as it works, in research, you have to show how your solution is better than the existing state-of-the-art. Professional career helps to prioritize things. If you can use the same technique during your PhD, you wshould be able to finish early and efficiently.

No, the best time to apply for fall 2008 is around dec 2007 to feb 2008. But it can vary from university. So just get ready with all the remaining material and send the application after your GRE.

Your case is complicated bcoz it seems you are potential migrant. If university is giving you schlorship then you may get visa otherwise it will be very tough. But keep applying.
