stamping of the visa when on OPT
by Priyanka on Aug 12, 2006 06:42 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

hi,

@ +nt I am on H4 and converting to F1 as soon going to join masters in Information System management.

As for F1 I know that it can be stamped from canada, mexico or india. But what about OPT ?

When I get OPT is it advisable to go back to India for a visit or first should have F1 stamped or should go to the homeland only after getting H1B in hand ?

I am planning to visit India only after completing the course so bit confused on the issue. Do suggest the best option.

Priyanka.

Avoid travelling on OPT if it is possible.

Once you get into school and you have valid I-20 then leave USA and get your visa stamp.

Hi

I have the same issue as you. I converted to f1 last yr from h4. I also want to know the best solution to this problem.

One of the advisors to my college for international affairs told me that its advisable to go back with a appointment letter in hand. The gist is get a job and then go. This is what I have heard so far. But what if you want to go before.. has anyone gone like that ? I was planning on going during OPT period. Will that be ok ?

I would ask anyone in this board to suggest some remedy or advice to this dilemma.

Hi,

For getting assistantship to do Ph.D. in management depends on many different criterion.

First and foremost is your GMAT score. If your GMAT score is above 700, you have descent changce of getting assistantship.

Second is your essay. If you write really good essay explaining why you want to do research and that also in USA without spelling and grammer error then chances of admission increases.

Last but not least is your recommendation letter. Please try to get recommendation letter from a well-known person. Also, if possible ask that person to manually write the recommendation form rather than print-out.

Let me know if you have any questions.

FYI Get your international driving license before leaving for US
by Amit and Shahnaz Wadke on Aug 11, 2006 10:55 PM  Permalink

This is for all the people who plan to come to India. You should get your International License done from local RTO as well as regular license. Remember when you come here the first thing you should do is apply for a license from USA. When you fill your forms, make sure you check YES -if you have a driving license from another country. This will waive off the dirivng test from the US but you will have to take the written test regardless. Your auto insurance rate would go down if you more driving history. So apply as soon as possible.

New security measures at airports
by Rediff Student Panel Expert on Aug 11, 2006 09:02 PM  Permalink

Hi

Post the terrorism attempt foiled in London yesterday, strict new security measures have been put in place in many countries. What tips would those of you who have travelled since yesterday have to share with those who might be leaving India soon? In terms of luggage, airport security measures, etc. Please share your experience and advice.

RE: Future after MS (Computer)
by nikhil on Aug 11, 2006 08:54 PM  Permalink

Hi ppl ...

I want to ask what is the job scene like now in the US for computer engineers .

1. Do students find a job after MS in computers that is financially enough to sustain himself and also pay back the student loan taken in India (assuming a Top-20 Univ)

2. What are the chances of recieving financial aid in MS program in computers ? I hav heard that it is especially difficult for students of Computer Engg to get aid than say other branches of engg. Wht percentage of students get it ? (assuming a Top-20 State funded Univ and good academics )

Thankyou for your time ....

Hoping for an early response

Nikhil

No. You won't be able to do MS while working with Infosys. I believe you are in US on a project from Infosys. You can take up all exams required, apply for a univ but before starting off your MS you need to get your visa status changed and leave the job.
