Carrer Hurdle / Career Hurdle?
by Dude on Apr 16, 2006 04:45 PM  Permalink

Excuse me!

Is it a \"Carrer Hurdle\"? We have all sorts of fitters and fiddlers, who can feed on our fears.

Your language
by Sucharita on Apr 16, 2006 03:09 PM  Permalink

..uh huh... promoting embarrasment about one's mother tongue all over again eh? and we go on admiring how the chinese and japanese and germans insist in speaking in their own respective languages, yet, we regard our mother tongues as hurdles. Sigh! The global economy....

Foreign experts
by Shiva on Apr 16, 2006 11:22 AM  Permalink

This was the answer from the expert:

Having strong Mother Tongue Influences does not at all mean that you cannot develop your accent.

What a sentence to use when answering queries from people with English Language difficulties? This is the main problem when people from Foreign Uni's try to act as if they are here to create a drastic change in Linguistic Skills in India. They never understand the ground truth but keep talking of methodologies that are never effective.

This is what we can ever be good for?

Developing accents?
What a non sensical purpose in life.

Sometimes such items of news re-instill nihilism in my thoughts.

Constructive criticism
by Prasanna on Apr 15, 2006 11:46 PM  Permalink

I strongly agree with Ravi when he says that criticism should be constructive. If some people have an edge over others when it comes to fluency in a language it doesn't mean they should go around mocking the others. It is a very discouraging act. And i believe people should be careful with what they say.

whats wrong with Indian accent?
by rajendra phadke on Apr 15, 2006 11:36 PM  Permalink

I havent ever heard English without accent...be it the British accent or multiple kinda accents all over the US of A......so whats wrong with Indian accent.....in US when u get to talk to Chiense or Japanese, they do have a heavy accent of their own.......unless you are working for a call center that specifically caters to US clientele you do not need to worry about your accent....dont fall for the phony propaganda........u dont need to change your accent.....if you are really good at what is your brief......no one cares how you speak.....rather be proud of your accent.......at least it spares u from being a sterotype pseudo desi.

Not good at English - No worries !
by NJ on Apr 15, 2006 11:32 PM  Permalink

You don't have to feel embarassed if you can't speak English in the same way as English men do (or as Americans do). We have to accept that it is not our mother tongue, so it's OK even if you aren't good at English.

Speak for you to learn
by Lalit on Apr 15, 2006 10:13 AM  Permalink

Personally I have found that people who cant speak English dont speak unless needed. Thats why you never learn. E.g. When two people of the same community meet 95% of the time regional language is spoken rather than English. Its also a myth that people who go to a English medium school speak English fluently. I have got many friends who went to a English medium school but have a pathetic command over English. Surely it could have been worse if the school medium was other than English.
In my opinion only when you speak would you learn about your grammatical mistakes. All you need is someone to correct your grammar and for you to speak to many people as possible.

English is just like any other language.
