A self-conflicting story
by s_c on Nov 05, 2005 05:38 PM  Permalink

It has been quite some time now that we are discussing this topic. And there is a clear conflict in the opinion of the people employed in this sector.

Undermining the very recent comparison of working in Call Centres with the "roman slavery", guys engaged in this sector told us about the "excellent" working conditions there.

Yet, a week back we saw that Govt of India has to come out with some sort of suugestion for maintaining a proper system to take care of the various health hazards, the call centres employees suffer from. I wonder, if all is so well, how come Govt of India got something like that in mind !!!

Hey, it seems like the young indians receiving some sort of tech qualification from a pvt college in bangalore, are being lured by the hefty pay that these call centres generally offer. Nothing more about the whole story. Working for a call Centre is an absolute nonsense in totality.

call centres: cheap
by s_c on Nov 04, 2005 07:55 PM  Permalink

Call Centres are all about "C"s... these are really so "Cheap".

I heard a few shouting, "Call Centres" will improve our poverty line. What can be a bigger joke, really! Can I please ask you, HOW?

Do you really think, filling up a middle-classed pocket in Bangalore will help the poor boy in Dadar (Mumbai) earn the two-sqaure meal? No way, that will ever gonna happen.

Call centres have no value, no corporate responsibility, no dream for anyone keep apart work ethics.

There is nothing really why we are so much after these. We should rather concentrate more on the value-added industries in India, that may actually do some good to us some day.

i think the guys sitting in ?VV giri institute are talking abt a govt job.....they need to realize that hire and fire and pay for performance are the rule of the day. though i am not from BPO industry i believe this industry should take sometime to set consistent practices...not vella fellows like paper and pen pushing babus of giri institute....

look at the real thing... contd..
by Sanjay on Nov 03, 2005 11:29 PM  Permalink

And look who's complaining.. ones who get a job by recommendation or the ones who don't need a job for living. At our plant when we advertise for 50 vacancies of educated engineers with above 70% marks, we get more than 10,000 applications. And the pay for a graduate engineer is Rs.6500 (consolidated) for 3 years!!. And thereafter too the salary rise is a paltry 5% per annum. I have been working there for 18 years now and make about 2,50,000 per annum (all inclusive) and the annual raise is about 5%. So in real life there are many guys who don't even get a decent job, and then there are call centres which pick you up and drop you off from work, have nice equiped canteen, you work in an airconditioned environment, have nice comfortable, good on posture chairs and nice desk, good work culture.. and what not..
And noone ever came out to write a book on our conditions. The condition I described is the condition of most process plants in the country. Go to any plant which works for 24x7x365 and you'll see the same there..
So guys, come down on earth.. if you get a better job, quit your call centre job and move on.. no one is stopping you. But let the less fortunate ones work and earn

Look at the real world guys and stop complaining!!
by Sanjay on Nov 03, 2005 11:27 PM  Permalink

Step out of your shoes guys and look out elsewhere.. I see no harm if these guys at call centre work overnight and if that working disturbs their biological cycle.
I work at a power plant (which generates electrical energy rquired to keep your ac's at home working at night also) and we have regular night shifts. The sector is in state PSU or central PSU and the working conditions are pathetic.. even the chairs we sit on during the shift duties are unsuitable to sit on.. (they have not been changed for the last 10 years only recaning has been done and the sitting angle changes with every recaning!!) and noone is complaining. We have been working for decades in night shift to provide you all power at night too.(Imagine noone working in night shifts.. so no power, no transport, no telephone, no TV at night!! imagine life with no night shifts..). We don't even have a canteen at our plant, the water which is available is not even purified water (we drink clarified water), we have plastic jugs in the control rooms and not even glasses, the urinals are in bad shape and stinking, wash basins are a source of bacteria culture.. and what nots..
continueed...

call centers work env comments - subjective !!!
by Sudha on Nov 03, 2005 11:05 PM  Permalink

This is unfair to target this industry alone.
Trying to draw similarity between Roman ships that once employed prison labour and Indian BPOs will definitely hurt thousands employed in Call centres.

This article tries to draw a parallel because of shift hours - Ain't this better than the >12 hr shift the software engineers in India are working for? this atleast has a definite time ..

About being constantly monitored - What is wrong with monitoring??Why isn't it looked as a means to ensure quality of work? Aren't there monitoring means in other industries.

These are old fashioned views which might hamper the growth of the industry/economy.

Cons On Call centre
by smitha on Nov 03, 2005 06:34 PM  Permalink

Hi Readers,

I have worked in call centre for 3 months in HUTCH
Call centre as a junior executive as soon as i finished my MBA i was given this offer to work in call centre i searched the job in my stream that is finance and H.r but could not find as i don't want to sit at home after doing MBA also i joined in call centre i can say call centre is the worst jobs where any one can take though they pay good and you get the
more exposure to the world of today our was a domestic call centre , one thing i will say call centre hire girls only b'coz they ahve lots of patience and tehy can do marketing we used get harresed by some hoax calls , some stupids call up and say I love You , and we do not even have a right to scold them , we have convince it seems , there is no support from the managemnt in the call centre jobs , the team leader or any one in the call centre do not support their gruop members , they treat girls as a slaves, or animals even if we want to take a leave , even then we have to come n work in the call centre .
I sugesst that espicially girls not work in the call centres, as few proposals for the girls are getting detained .
