Dear Sandeep
I also had the same problem as urs last year but finally managed to get all the IIM calls.
One possible strategy i would suggest u is to try to juggle the time u devote to each section. For example, if english is your strength, may be u can have a 30:45:45 combination for Verbal, Maths & DI in that order .
If that does not help, go to the basics . make sure that u r extremely thorough with ur fundamentals in maths. for this, go through ur basic funda books or if need be , the maths text books again and again so that the concepts are etched in ur mind. But beware, dont mug up. try to understand the logic behind each and every problem .
Next, once u have taken a mock test , go through the solution carefully to ascertain what exactly went wrong.
If that also fails, try to focus on ur specific areas of strength in Quant and DI. Preapare them so well that u are able to answer almost anything under the sun on those topics.
Most importantly, if u cant solve a problem in quant or DI, dont take it as a challenge and devote disproportionate amount of time on it . Remember, CAT is all about smart and not hard work.
shud u feel like,contact me mr_sumitpathak@rediffmail

by Sylvia on Oct 06, 2004 12:13 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am an arts student, with ref.to only commerce and engineering students cracking CAT.Do we arts students stand a chance. Its not that we cant clear it but its a mindset that arts student dont usually stand a chance among commerce and science students.I would like to know do arts student stand chances of getting into IIM's when compared to commerce and science. If so what percentage of arts students do get in and do we have any separate parameters we are scored on.Plz do let me know if u have any approx.idea as to how many do really get in....

hi cracking cat is as easy for arts students as for iits and ca because its all about how you use your brain and work upon it follow a strategy by heart and
dont fear maths at all and build your strong area first follow the funda by heart believe in god AND YOUR STRENGTH THATS SOLVE!

Dear Sylvia,
As a student of IIM , let me assure u that as an arts student u are not at all at a disadvantage when it comes to cracking CAT because the sectional cut offs are different for students from different graduation backgrounds . Further, all IIMs always look at having as heterogeneous batch as possible and hence do not favour or discriminate against students from a particular background.
SO, just get going and crack it !!!

I am an arts student and wanting to take up CAT.......but at the way CAT is being posed as an exam where its only meant for commerce or engineering students though i know its not only for them but what abt we arts students who are really interested in appearing but i think will have no scope when compared to the commerce and engineering students.Though we are not well versed with maths....it would be quite difficult for us ,,,, u may say its just a mindset but logically speaking its quite a task for we arts students.....I would like to know if there are different parameters on which we r scored .... and how much of a chance do we stand....do us usually find ppl from arts background getting into IIM's.

Hi! Some progressive B-Schools do look at Art graduates. Usually the key issue with preperation is Math as you said and it has to be worked on. Math requires "regular practice". Initially all the areas might seem vauge. So slowly start with areas which are considered basic like numbers, HCF, LCM, Percentages because unless you are strong on all these, you will face problems in other areas like profit and loss etc. So you need to move step by step. It all starts from the understanding how improtant

Yes!
you can do it so as i have done in year 2003 in IIM-A .
i was bcom from open university and i di crack the cat and have been in iim and will graduate soon.
my friend it is because the engineers are large in numbers so the are large on campus but believe me MBA form BCOM are too good because they are already set for the MBA mood
so JUSt Do IT.

Why he and not she ?????

I was just wondering why the writer assumes the student to be male......

"For months together he won't have much to do. But the day he decides to take CAT, he will be put on a 'highly critical' project and all his plans to study will go ka-boom!"

hey there......
your comments in your article "Why he and not she ?????" were very well thought of.

however i personally think that it was ill timed.
the only thing I suppose is that you are going to appear for CAT this november and you are trying to create a debate for your overall personality development.

again if you are interested in the gender related issues rather than the actual stuff, you will be losing out on many other important points.

this is waht i think of your comment, try to take it in a non pessimestic manner so that you brighten your CAT chances.

c ya.

oh..ya... i completely understand if you dont reply.

there are more number of engineers in IMMs because more number of engineers attempt for CAT.if there are 100 vacancies for IIMs and if there are 130 candidates who have equal score and if out of them if 20 are commerce people, then whom do u think will the IIMs take...surely all the engineers as they want to produce best managers who have best brains

The essence of continuous preparation!
by Ramasubramaniam.S on Sep 30, 2004 01:15 AM  Permalink

Iam a Chartered accountant currently in PGP programme of IIM Ahmedabad - Class of 2006.

The essence is being equally good in all three areas tested in CAT - Maths, Verbal Ability and Data Interpretation.

For this continuous preparation for 3 months is required as a break of even one week reduces the speed at which questions can be cracked.

Plus understanding one's strengths and playing to it is an effective approach. The Mock Cats are ideal platforms to test the various exam strategies.

CAT is a test of smartness and not sheer skills. Like one has to understand the weightage for an easy and tough question is the same..So skim through the paper first and answer the easy ones..Trust me- Easier said than done!

And never give up till the last second in the exam hall as one more correct answer can make a huge difference!

All the Best.
Ramasubramaniam.S
