I am a proffessional animator and have been working for three years in this field now, and I must say the " know all" here as absolutely no clue about animation. Some of his comments can actually scare aspiring animators to death. " Animators work in complete isolation.....must know everything ...blah blah" In fact animators in a proffessional 3D animation studio need to bother only about animation, other departments like modelling, texturing and lighting are handled by respective departmental aritsts.
Another hilarious thing I read was that for him 3D animation is just putting puppets on a set and then animating them shot by shot, true, but that is not the modern and most popular mode of 3D animation right now, the one that new people are getting into is 3D computer animation, where you animate your 'model' in the computer, you set your keyframes and the computer helps you with the 'inbetweens'.
The computer animation field is not about just animating....producing realistic movements in your characters, there are a lot of other branches and departments that you can excel in, like modelling, texturing, effects, lighting, conceptual design, and programming.

Hi Indranil, Computer graphics and animation are relatively new fields which are in the boom right now, and I believe that in the coming years, since it is so computer related, its going to stay that way. This is a good field for getting a good salary, I know, I work in China and find this field very lucrative. The sky is the limit if you have the creativity, the eye for detail and are willing to put in hours and hours of hard work.
Also,if you are good enough you could work anywhere in the world !!!
I think a good way to start would be to find out if you are really a creative and artistic person, skill in some form of traditional art like drawing, painting or scultping can help a lot. If you cant do this, then you could stake your claim on some of the non artistic departments in computer graphics like a software expert or simply doing grunt work like modelling nuts and bolts or door frames for 3D sets !! The point is there is work for everyone if you are willing to put in the extra effort.
I believe a good way to start would be an animation institute, but if you can get your own computer and an internet connection, you are all set !!!
