Performance enhancing drugs vs. illegal drugs
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Jul 21, 2008 10:36 AM  Permalink

There's a difference between consuming a performance enhancing drug (Warne, Akhtar, Asif) and something like Marijuana. Marijuana, like Alcohol, is a narcotic - it retards the central nervous system. It's like showing up to play drunk - you'll get out first ball. Contrast this to naldrolone that is an anabolic steroid, to beef up muscles and prevent injury.

What Akram or Murray did may have been illegal in the country they were at the time (note Marijuana is legal in many countries. Bhang is marijuana, and while not technically legal, cultural reasons make police look the other way), their actions had nothing to do with cheating. It was like Flintoff getting drunk - indisciplined, yes, stupid, yes, but not cheating. To lump all of them together in one boat is blurring the issue between recreational drug use and performance enhancing drug use. Of the former, one should hardly care - it's a personal choice and should be dealt with by the respective board. The other is cheating and needs to be dealt with by ICC/WADA.

Match Fixing
by Guest on Jul 16, 2008 10:25 AM  Permalink

What about match fixing? Its a bigger crime to cheat with your country by not playing well rather than using enhancing drugs to improve perfomance in general

What if the Indian players were caught drinking bhang after a big memorable win? Would that make the "hall of shame" as well?

We are not the kind who will take drugs to perform better. We will rather take money to perform worse. All these guys are idiots.
