Favourites theory
by SK on Apr 23, 2008 12:54 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

With high regards for Prem Panicker, I beg to differ from him.

How could he imagine that a side good on paper is a favourite to win the title? If experience is the biggest teacher, then he SHOULD not go by favourites. Was Sri Lanka the best side when the WC 96 began? Or for that matter was India the best side at the start of WC 83?

I would say, a side of spirited, talented and coherent players, with an eagerness to perform, and play as a team is the favourite for the title. We are talking 20-20 here as opposed to test match cricket, where experience and past records would have mattered. For that matter I would say even Rajastan Royals can be an absoulte favourite.

VVS Laxman would have been the best bet if it had been a test tournament. But 20-20, no way!

even if it had been a test tournamanet, VVS's team would have no chance whatsoever.
Its pretty evident when u see the DC's bowling "attack" comprising of vaas,RP,symo, ojha etc that they wont make any impact in T20, i shudder to think what they would have done in tests with such bowling prowress

now it is clear that Bowling is weak side of DC. In t-20 matches 3 side are imporatant.
1 Batting
2 bowling
3 the most important is strtergy.

The people who chose the players might have been under the impression that 20 20 is after all a batsman's game and bowlers dont have much of a role to play.
But as we saw yesterday, the opening spell by McGrath and Asif proved crucial.
Bowlers are important in this format as one good over can make all the difference.
But I'll also say you need luck even if you're a good bowler to not get hit for runs in this format.

there's a misconception that batters are more imp than bowlers in T20, but just think for a min,...
all u need in T20 is slogging right...if 11 mediocre players start slogging, surely couple of them will click and thats what u need in T20....just 3-4 players scoring runs, which anyone can given the nature of game.....even a bowler can have a gr8 day and score quick runs...

but its not the case bowlers, u need quality bowling attack to bowl yorkers consistently...there's nothing much a batter can do when he has to face yorkers consistently...
thats why a team with good bowlers will win inspite of an avg batting lineup in T20....

Rayudu apparently didnt get along with Arjun Yadav when they played for Hyderabad. So Shivlal made sure Rayudu didnt rise up the ranks.
He decided to opt for ICL instead of waiting to be selected for the national side.

I thought their bowling was very disciplined right at the start. But a batsmen like Afridi or Gilchrist can upset them anytime if its their day in a 20 20 game.

I agree. I think Ojha should be left in the team.
Kick Venugopal Rao out and send Laxman down the order.
Also it's almost as if that Arjun Yadav has got a free ticket to play because of his father's influence. In such case, he should be sent up as an opener and asked to go for the big shots.
What's his use at No.6 or 7 when he cant even bowl ? Are they protecting his ass ? That sounds very unprofessional to me.
Also Afridi at No.3 and Rohit Sharma at 4. Symonds at 5 and Laxman at 6.
Anyway none of these will matter in 20 20 if one batsman like Gilly,Symonds or Afridi get going.

Its not about playing shots .. DC s formidable batting is not able to utilize full 20 overs even.
leave rohit and they had got out in 15 overs.
laxman should open with gilly to give some slow and steady start..

or I feel vaas should be out.

gilly gibbs at open
symonds and afridi in middle

It's a frickin 20 20 pyjama game for god's sake.
It's all about luck and one batsman/bowler clicking.
People here are making it out to be some grand contest. Any team can beat any other team provided it's their day.
It doesnt really matter who is in the team or not.
