Great Point. But shallow. If, at all somebody started measuring GDP in terms of Happiness units, rather than dollars and cents. They certainly have improved the GDP of India. The average guy on the street, might not get a crore ruppee that Yuvraj got, but those few moments of pride and happiness that he got watching Yuvraj hit those sixes or India winning the cup - are worth more than what a crore ruppees would have bought him. None of these actors, cricketers, journalists, politicians can change my life drastically in terms of dollars and cents, but if they give me and the average guy on the street -- those moments to cherish and make me feel a part of something big -- I think they have done more than what they would do by giving just one of us a house to live in.
So for that my friend, spread optimism and make people feel good, than lowering the GDP of the country.

Totally agree with you. Can the author explain what is the relationship between cricket, begging, potholes on road. Everybody plays some sort of game for enjoyment...may be gilli danda or cricket. The standard of articles in rediff is going rock bottom. All rediff wants is some eye catching title for the article.
I am a cricket lover and an ardent follower of Indian team. This world cup win brought tears of joy in my eyes. And I enjoyed the cricket. And there I draw the line. What are all those politicians and board officials doing there? They are taking advantage of public's sentiments. Give due credit to achievements but only what is due. Enjoy the game as a game and move on. I am saddened by the over dose of festivities going on.
Well whoever you are, I am not concerned. It look you are frustrated in life.I practice my Medicine fairly, teach students, present scientific paper in conference, write medical books, attend club, have two chotas, enjoy good music of any kind, watch cricket, foot ball, hocky tenis, move around friends and feel proud when India achieves something great in any field.I get equal pleasure in serving village in community work in week ends as I enjoy sports. It seems you are trying to open a fools club No I am not in line.Enjoy yourself.
Following a sport is an individual decision. If you do not like it, you may switch over to a different channel.
Agree with you on the insanity shown at times by the crowd. That is something that will come with education. We see this kind of reaction in other aspects of life as well. So this is not a result of Cricket. It is part of our society that we need to correct.
But I am amazed to see the public support for such activities. It is great that the Indian team won the world cup, but this behaviour of the CMs is in line with the Rajas & Maharajas of the old times.
CMs are not Rajas or Maharajahs. Whos money are they spending ?
They can gift their personal money as gift to anyone they like, but this kind of un-checked tax money spending is insane.
Indian players are NOT under-paid. The BCCI will and does compensate them well.
I am not a big fan of Modi and I am not sure what his motivations are but I do not believe that it is right for a CM to shell out TAX money when there are other genuine and more pressing needs within the state.
i too agree with you although i am a fan of cricket but will never support at least miss use of money. here rich people are becoming richer. There is no need to spend lakhs of money on the player because they are already earning by so many ways like game, advertisment, and so on..
Prize for them are our love to them. Fews lakhs of money does not make diffrence in their life but of course it makes in life of poor people. So rather than giving them it should be ditributed for some constructive work on the name of World cut Twenty20. Some schools can be built on this name by same money.
Since i am a member of farmer family, and have spent my early 18 yrs in village and know the importance on money. But its my fortunate that now i am in Switzerland and not in need of any sympathetical maney. I do love cricket and enjoyed the match too over here.
But once again not in favour to give money to players.

yes. although cricketers shud b given due credit for their achievement, the fact is that they r very rich. and if they need to be encouraged by way of money, just give it from the bcci's tijori and not from the govt's exchequer which is the common man's hard earned money.
Whoever you are. i can see that you are a in life who cannot appreciate others' achievements. Remember that doing something is like these guys is not as easy as sitting in your living room (if i xcan call it that) and writing articles which are mere words. if you are so concerned about the poor in India. tell me what are you contributing towards their relief. stop ridiculing others' achievements.
so in other words, you are saying because India is a poor country, that peple are starving, one should not enjoy life? one should not revel in achievements, I feel for every Indian that is starving and wish I could do more to alleviate their pain, I have a lot of sorrow, but inspite of all the grief, I will continue to be joyfull, one can be sensitive to various issues that are wrong in our country and one should also enjoy those few joyfull moments.
