I agree
by Anirban C on Sep 27, 2007 01:25 AM  Permalink

Hey, I agree with you to a large extent - but for the fact that the same is applicable for Bollywood movies, Pakistan Hating, the Shiv Sena, the TV shows etc etc etc .... So, why blame cricket - it is probably better way of creating a mass hysteria than all the others ...

Waste of Money and Time
by amber abbas on Sep 27, 2007 01:20 AM  Permalink

Brother,

It looks to me that you want to get popular by criticizing Indian Cricket team achievement. I am surprised to read that you are saying you are honored to have a one-to-one breakfast with Allan Border. Another hand you say that others are wasting time and money. I agree with you on the crazy fans behavior, where they demolished the house of Dhoni. But this is the time to celebrate as India won against the arch rival Pakistan. I am Muslim, but never prayed that Pakistan should win a match against India - reason my religion says that you should love your motherland first. I myself played for state and first class, toured diff. countries to play Cricket and earned a lot of money. I appreciate your concern on GDP and poverty, but honest tell me - what you have done to make the country progress or country proud on you?? Criticizing is very easy, but achievements are not. I have seen 3 types of people in my life 1. Who creates the problems 2. Who raises the flag for problems, but don't do any thing and 3. Who really works. My understanding is that you belongs to type 2 - who raises the flag for problems, but don't do anything practically. We all criticize political leaders and Indian system to be corrupt; why none of us will come forward to clean all the mess?? You mentioned that you not seen a road in Mumbai without a potholes %u2013 what you did?? Saying is very easy, not working. First work and work till you get the reorganization from the society and government, and

Dont be a spoil sport and hypocrite
by rajiv on Sep 27, 2007 12:30 AM  Permalink

Hey Man,
You say "I had a rare privilege to have one-on-one breakfast with Allan Border, Australian captain". Why didnt you work instead of wasting your time for this "rare privilege" and contribute your earnings to the GDP of India? Don't write something just to have an opposing view point. It seems to me that you are living your life against your own view points. At least the crowd at the reception was not hypocritical.

by NEERAJ on Sep 27, 2007 12:23 AM  Permalink

It gets people out of their daily drudegery and gives them hope. Hope for a few hours where they can forget all their troubles.

Just like you preform well you get raises and bonus in your job, this is their job. No need to be judgemental/ critical of other poples profession. Do your thing man. Don't waste time penning articles on a sujects like cricket- that you don't like.

Let them enjoy. And you enjoy. Don't waste your time on cricket. Let people who love Cricket spend their time and money on something they love. Best of Luck for your future. Try not to be judgemental.

Stop Whining!
by umashankar dubey on Sep 27, 2007 12:16 AM  Permalink

All I wanna say is stop whining and dont be a wise crack .. so what if there is disparity in India .. does that mean Mukesh/Anil Ambani must give up their billions and moan the fact that there are poor Indians .. if something brings so much joy to a vast majority of people then it must be right .. so really stop whining and dont try and dampen everyone else's spirits and take away from the players their achievements .. its not everyday that one wins a world cup!

Victory no matter how large or small is for one to cherish and remember. Regardless of loving or hating a game Indians unite all over the world not only in India to celebrate with these young men. The future of our growing nation. We applauded the IT people, the business men so why not our men in blue? Instead of writing something telling Millions if not Billions around the world they wasted their time how about just joining in and enjoying being one with the rest of the country.

Indian Hunger for Top Quality Sports Performers
by Baskar Guha on Sep 26, 2007 11:38 PM  Permalink

From what I can tell, India is starved for top-quality sports performers and every one who is even marginally successful is celebrated. Indian cricket is obviously seen as being right up there with the best and so is held in high esteem. Indian hockey, for example, will also enjoy greater affection if they win a world championship or two which they used to with ease in decades past. There is nothing wrong in using sports achievements to express national pride and generally feel good as long as it is done with a degree of perspective. For many people, it is a nice escape from the quiet despair of daily life.
