Apropos the captaincy, it is a fact that the captains from the south have always been softies; well behaved, knowledgeable, intelligent and EDUCATED. They will not bring themselves to the level of the crude uneducated politicos and petty businessmen who hold the power at the BCCI. Ergo, they become misfits. In the present situation, there is no need to look beyond Laxman. He has atleast 4 good years in him and except for Dravid there is no one in the entire country who can match his prowess. If a shorter time span is considered, Kumble would be the ideal choice, he will be around for two more years.

Captains from south have always been softies; well behaved (that is their mask), knowledgeable, intelligent (clever), educated AND GREAT POLITICIANS. They always played dirty tricks to stay as captain.
Dravid was hand in gloves with chappel and jointly destroyed the indian team prior to world cup.

the first captain to exit with dignity is from south. That is one thing we have in the south, DIGNITY.

That is your perception but my experience says a major chunk of South Indians are of very regionalistic mindset, extremely conservative, indulge into provincialism, and great manipulators. Exceptions are always there but the face of a clan is how majority behaves. They pose a threat to national integrity - it is only my observation after coming across many many South Indians both in their states as well as other parts of this country.

What did he acheived by destroying the team prior to the world cup, losing indian captain. Do you think any insane person will destroy his team just prior to World Cup and come back as a first round exit. Go beyond any sort of regionalism and give credit to the person who has been instrumental in bringing great victories for India. No other batsman in Indian cricket history can be compared to Dravid, he has been instrumental in most great test victories...NewZealand, Pakistan, Australia, England...Check out the matches India won under Ganguly and check Dravid's contribution in those. Ganguly was terribly out of form those days and Dravid if he would have been a politician would have failed on those crucial moments and our Dada would have been sacked quite early. Dravid is a great team man. Few more things:- I dont have and regional or religion wise any affection for Dravid & I belong to North India. I am a great fan of Tendulkar of past and every inning I wish he would play like in his past days. I am very big of Ganguly's aggression which changed the way Indian players look in field now. All this I said to prove some nuts amongst you that I am not biased in any manner towards Dravid... Positive comments are welcome...Thanks

If you call Dravid neither demonstrative nor flamboyant what do you call Agarkar? why do u still carry a useless payload along with the team. Agarkar is fit only to carry bottles into the ground for players.

I fully agree with you. In so many crunch matches, he gives away lots of runs through wayward bowling and fails with the bat when even few runs or staying on the wicket would help the cause.

Yes i feel agarkar is a total misfit. The other day we lost the game with NZL bcos of him, his 22 run over!!. He should be virtualy banned from playing for india.. he is a totally useless player.. I cant imagine how a bowler can let a batsmen konk him for boundary after boundary - ball after ball.. we would've won the match yetserday had dhoni not bowled agarkar and yuvraj for that extra over... I feel pity at the indian selection committee which is posing faith again and again on such a useless player who is nothing but harmful to the interests of the team... Against pakistan too he bowled a spinelss over conceeding 17 runs, when India needed him to be as economical as possible.. Had it not been for him, we would've won the match in the normal way that day. even the erratic sreesanth was sane enough to contain the batsmen... It was with sheer luck that we scraped through in that match with pakistan. Agarkar had done whatever he coould to fail india's cause.. I once again request the indian team management not to consider such useless, unproffesional players in the future ofr any format of the game

Agarkar doesn't deserve a place even in a school team. I don't know how such a useless person can get to play for a national side for such a long time.. It could happen only in India. And with Maharashtrians taking control of the board, Agarkar could be assured of his place in the team for another few years. Had he been a non-Maharashtrian, he would've been dropped a long time ago...

what marathi lobby are u taking about. If there was marathi lobby many good players from mumbai & maharashtra would have been playing for India?
You can see this postand realize that India is so much divided.... Maharashtrian praises Maharashtrian.... Bengali praises bengali...Kanadiga praises kanadiga... I really wonder what is holding on this nation from getting disintregated into many countries... we always blaim politicians and infact regionalism and castesism is so much deep rooted in our mindset taht we end up electing leaders and politicians on the same basis and create this vicious cycle.

In my opinion it wud b better to divide all states and make them independent countries. When we say india is the sole example of "Unity within diversity" we know what a big lie we're saying. As a country we can nvr grow, so better if u divide all the states, at least then there can be some progress.

What percent of the Indian population comment on rediff? (I don't know but surely it will be a miniscule of our big big population).
Thus, the opinion expressed by the majority on the rediff forum cannot be consider as the opinion of majority Indians.
Rediff forum is more of an entertainment, don't be unduly worried about what is written on it. Even I write abusive messages at times, but those are generally intended to add fuel to the fire and watch the fun!

not everyone is like what you propose. here are some general observations on this forum:
tendulkar is appreciated universally, but not his bombaiyya favouritism.
agarkar is universally reviled.
dravid is appreciated for his gritty performance, but he still carries a "slow player" tag for reasons unknown
same with kumble who's not known for his spin bowling but accuracy, despite his contribution he's still doubted
ganguly has a legion of fans. while his fans think of him to be greater than god, everyone ackowledges that he was very good for two thirds of this captaincy (the last part was marred with bad form, saving his skin and promoting politics to protect himself).
vvs laxman is praised when he does well, and when he's patchy hes the worst player for the public
powar is laughed at despite him being a better feilder than many others in the team.
While Borde actually complements Dravid on his abilities, rediff has sadly chosen to misquote him just to get a few hits. This is the unfortunate side of Indian media, we've gotten into sensation driven, mindless journalism. Please pull off this headline and let Dravid live in peace. Dravid has led India through the most troubled times and quit at the right time.

The problem is with your Mr. Srinivasan and Balaji.
If the sentence says, 'Dravid is not flayboyant' it does'nt convey any negative. If you are asked to write just the opposite of this sentence, what you will write? The correct sentence, opposite to the above heading is 'Dravid is matured'. If somebody says someone is matured, is it something negative?

Bharat, the post about Sachin's centuries in losing causes was far too long to fit into one comment.. Thats the reason, I resorted to posting replies to my own comment ! It was meant as a continuation. Anyways , it wasn't meant as an intelligent comment. There'z so much stupidy around here. I thought I will just add to it ! Idiots of the world unite. Thanx rediff for contributing to this great cause of unification of idiots. Keep up the good work
Number of times a player scored 50 Name/Matches/MOM/Success Sachin 395 124 &nb sp; 31.4% Jayasuriya 398 89&n bsp; 22.4% Saurav 302 9 3 30.8% Lara 299 82 27.4% Ponting 280 &n bsp;85 30.4% V. Richards 187 56 29.9 % Dravid 327 93 2 8.4% Gilchrist 268 65 & nbsp;24.3%
Whichever way you look at it... Sachin has been most consistent and probability of his contribution is highest compared to his peers... the ratio of MOM and MOS will clearly tell how he has been the most succesful in making India win....
Now go and look at being the losing side... he figures most in the list... check all this in cricinfo.... in short he was one man army!
factor the huge people expectation and criticism he has to go though... and you will realise everyone else would have died of cardiac arrest... i do not remember anyday when Saurav or Dravid were expected to perform as he was!!!

You may be aware that making runs is not considered as success. A person of Sachin's calible is expected to perform in the need of the hour. Sachin never performed under pressure. If you insist I may admit on couple of occasions he would have performed but not more than that. It is not that I am against Sachin or any individual. Dravid, Laxman, Yuvraj and Kaif have proven record of performing under immense pressure.

Dont be a statistical goose... Tell me only one answer... How many World Cups did Sachin win for INDIA???? - ??????
Now tell me where is your statistics... i will tell you the other side of it.
Jayasuriya - Has won a world cup for his country Ponting and Gilchrist - has won more than 1 for their countries Richards - has won more than 1 world cup for their countries
"NOW THIS IS WHAT IS CALLED AS A MATCH-WINNER"
IT WOULD BE BETTER TO STOP ANY MORE OF TENDULKAR'S PRAISE... WE WILL JUST ACKNOWLEDGE HIM AS A GOOD BATSMAN. THATS IT.
