You get what you deserve
by on Oct 18, 2007 12:21 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Mr Pointing, What are you complaining about? Did you forget the way your team behaved during Champions trophy presentation. Sharad Pawar, one of the know figures in country was pushed on the stage by your same team...I mean this is only one of them.

Since last 10-15 years, Australians think they are on the Moon or Sun and not on Earth. They do or say anything to anybody, but nobody should say them. Kick them out from the earth.

Can somebody explain the racism angle?
by Ramkishore S on Oct 18, 2007 12:16 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Okay, so Symonds was called a monkey and people imitated monkey antics when he was near. It certainly is offensive and "not cricket", even if Symonds does look more like a gorilla than most gorillas do. But how does that make these comments racist? Like Inzamam is called Aloo, and Ramesh Powar a lot more imaginative stuff. So?

Calling a person with African heritage a monkey takes us back to the 18th century when the africans were abused by their slave masters and one of the common abuse was calling them apes or monkeys. Just we think slavery is a ghost of the past, if such taunts surface up again it is indeed very sad!

It is perhaps more out of ignorance and no racist intent is involved in such comments, atleast I hope. But in such a sensitive issue, ignorance is not an excuse.

its a universal fact that we evolved from apes. So how come monkey act be abusive against african race...i hope it represents the whole human race.

You are not a Rebel. You sing for Australians. If you are an Indian I find it that it is difficult for you to come out of the mindset of being suborinate to the Whites which is in born with you from the Britsh time in India. If you are not an Indian you are unable to accept that Indians too can do anything as good or better than the Whites whether it is in games or racial taunts/chants.

I was serious in wanting to know the racism angle to the taunt. "Coolie" etc. is a derogatory throwback to the colonial professions of Indians. But why is monkey being seen as a racist taunt? Like if Ramesh Powar were to be called a sack of coal whether in India or Australia, it cannot be a racist taunt but merely an accurate (even if distasteful) description of him.

RE:RE:Can somebody explain the racism angle?

Racist taunt is precisely such name calling based on the colour of the skin or basing upon a generalisation like coolie.

Just imagine what goes thru the mind of a person who does such name calling. He only sees the skin colour and makes a quick judgement of his race or ethnicity. The only thing they can then think of is a comment like Coolie or Monkey. Now how is that not racist. They have not cared to look beyond the skin colour or race.

When I watch cricket that's in India and the camera shows the crowd I often think they look like monkeys. Hairy, dirty little children wearing loincloth clothes climbing trees and abandoned buildings to get a look at the stadium. They look exactly like a pack of monkeys, yet when I say it my girlfriend says I'm racist! It's stupid

Chris, Cool down. Its a kwon fact that Indian "Males" are being immigrated freely to Aus for years just to maintain and incraese the population level in Aus.

Its because Aus is flooded with lots of "Chrises".

I'm perfectly chill sir, though I am not of Indian descent. Yes many Indians (not just males) are and have immigrated to Australia, because well... why not? And yes Australia is flooded with alot of Indians or Australians of Indian descent, they come here for the better standard of life, which proves true, which in turn attracts more as the news spreads. What's your point?

Australian attitudes in sports arena
by mvk krishnamurty on Oct 18, 2007 12:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The problem in fact is different. For ages the Australians remained the masters of what is euphomistically called 'sledging'. No other crciket team did it. The WI team who were the world beaters in 70's and 80's never resorted to this. There was no need to do that. They were that much better than the rest. Now when the Aussies find somebody doing that to them, they are not liking it. These people have brought down the reputation of the game by several notches. Cricket should be played like any other game : like Tennis, football. Wear the batsmen down with skill, not with dirty and unbecoming words, because a stage of this far and no further will come, as it has now in this current series. When Ponting pushed out Mr. Powar from the rostrum, he was not making a great advertisement for a sports captain. But then that is their standard. It is easy to fall but very very difficult to rise.

by vimal jain on Oct 18, 2007 12:12 PM  Permalink

this jst a time when ppl think that aussies are vidicated. its jst that on field aussies have been less aggressive then indians which they havent expected and planned, for everything else they have a counterattck plan ready....now they will come up with new plan and stratergy when we go down under...to be a bit more agressive then us...to look stupid again..
the entire series was jst to give back the behaviour they showed in champions trophy last tme around...thats the reason indians have behaved like this...and no issues in that...

by Manoj Mehta on Oct 18, 2007 12:12 PM  Permalink

Why australlians are complaining? Their players are masters of abusing in cricket field & they are getting it back from people from the stadium.

Let them learn to behave first & then feel bad on getting abused. People will do it again on Saturday in 20- 20 match.

I fail to understand ,What sort of a racial abuse Symonds is subjected to . Visiting teams will face some dificulty with te crowds, where ever they go. It is part of their game. IF some of spectatora are making monkey noises, and booing Symonds should take it as a part of the game, and get on with it.Rediff should not give such a write up,with these sort of headlines.
