Tendulkar tops Warne's greatest cricketers list
by Ritwik Bhuyan on Nov 20, 2007 09:50 AM  Permalink

Sachin Tendulkar topped Shane Warne's countdown of greatest cricketers edging out Brian Lara, who was placed second. Curtly Ambrose, Allan Border and Glenn McGrath rounded out the top five in Warne's Times column.

Warne rated Tendulkar ahead of Lara on account of his mental toughness and hailed him as a "great player and a great man". He wrote, "Outside grounds [in India], people wait until he [Tendulkar] goes in before paying to enter. They seem to want a wicket to fall even though it is their own side that will suffer ... He [Tendulkar] grew up under incredible weight of expectation and never buckled once - not under poor umpiring decisions or anything else."

Warne and Tendulkar clashed several times on the field, but their most most famous battles were on Australia's tour to India in 1997-98. Warne struck the first salvo, dismissing Tendulkar for 4 in the first Test, but was then taken apart in the second, going for 122 runs in 30 overs as Tendulkar smashed a matchwinning unbeaten 155. Tendulkar finished the series with an average of 111, while Warne's ten wickets cost him 54 apiece.

Five Australians were placed in the top ten, including three of Warne's captains - Border, Ricky Ponting and Mark Taylor. Ian Healy, tenth on the list, was described as the best wicketkeeper he'd ever seen.

the trio of indian cricket have again showed their cheap mentality...they know for sure if vengsarkar the colonel had stayed for long they will be in trouble...so they used their influence, chalked out a plan and kicked colonel out..these trio want to play till 60 years old...sachin recently commented that seniors are not getting their due..what does he want..entire maharashtra in his name???Lets see waht these jokers will do in australia???only laxman, yuvarj and dhoni will shine...not becoz they are great batsmen but because of positive and never say die attitude...

Have you seen their performance after the World Cup debacle ? They have only lost the ODI series against Australia (which was expected) and the ODI series against England (due to bad decisions from the umpire in the 7th ODI). Other than that they have been winning everything else.

The little master have proved once again. Please don't compare the legand with others. Everyone have the own sytle and records in their career but only few can withstand and dedicate their life to their profession. My heart wishes to all our young indian cricketers who brought the 20twenty worldcup.

Sachin useless
by on Nov 20, 2007 08:59 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

sachin plays only for records and personal gains. We have seen lot of times how is batting prowess goes down when he reaches 90. He is so scared of missing his hundred that he takes atleast 3 overs to hit 3 runs.He may be a great player but never shoulders responsibility like yuvraj has done in recent times.

His batting average and consisitency shows the kind of player he is. Only fools can question his batting ability. Though, Sachin can never get back to his original form, he is still the best batsman in the world. Not, because i m an Indian , i say this, but his record says it all.

sachin is NOT a match winner but yuvaraj is...sachin cant play when india is chasing a big total wheras yuvaraj can do it...sachin can only hit centuries when batting first and succumbs under high pressure when his individual score is in the 90s...yuvaraj when hit a sixer even when he is on 99...yuvaraj is ateam player...sachin did not bring any world cup victory to india in his long career but yuvaraj got us the 20-20 WC and still will bring more...so stop comparing sachin with yuvarj...

You are clearly quite a cricket illiterate.. it takes much much more to win the 50-over world cup than the T20 World Cup.. sachin single handedly took india to the semis of 1996 WC and finals of 2003 WC.. yuvraj will always be a finisher for india and never a player who can play 50 overs like Sachin.. that is y he comes at 4 or 5.. the state of indian cricket will be in dumps once sachin retires.. even today he is the batsmen most bowlers fear.. so stop comparing sachin n yuvraj.. go check how many matches yuvraj has won for India when someone like Sachin, Sourav or Dravid did not lay the foundation for him.. yuvraj and dhoni are just a replacement for the Jadeja-Robin Singh combination.. but no one can take Sachin's place..Sachin is the best thing that happened to Indian and World cricket

Terminator let us not get into hair spllting.Whether Sachin can play 2 innings etc. Is opening slot a relaxed batting slot? An opener in format is already under pressure even as he pads up.More so in test cricket Middle order is a place where you pace a game So telling Sach cannot handle pressure is not convincing Whatever u may say Sach is Gods gift to cricket for this generation and Let us be happy and proud that he is one of us ie An Indian

Jadeja-Robin Singh to Yuvraj-Dhoni, this is amazing comparison. I wonder sachin-fanatics at all understand what is sports in general leave alone cricket. Can 'Jadeja-The-Fixer' match the audacity of yuvraj or Robin singh match the Power hitting and consistency of dhoni. The typical indian mentality of creating Hill out of mole and creating demi gods like sachin, who are good players no doubt but 'THE GOD' of cricket is some what over-exaggeration and way too grossly over hyped. This is a team game and every player has a specific role to play just like sachin plays the role of opener but who doesn't know that the same sachin failed misrabely when he used to come down the order for about good 60-70 odd matches, where Yuvraj is doing so wonderfully well, even jadeja accepted this in an interview that Yuvraj-Dhoni is probably the best number 4-5 batsman india has ever produced. India won as many matches as may be sachin won when he wsa not part of the team and saurav-sehwag were the openers for almost 2 years. Sachin was reduced to the miniscule spectater and his fortune was not revived till finally Dalmiya was ousted.

Abe Chaman...

Sachin is opener and Yuvraj is middle order batsman, can both be compared paisa by paisa. The most prolific captains have always belonged to middle-order B'coz of there ability to handle the pressure and you understand who is captain? the best of the team. Sachin himself knows that he is not good at handeling the pressure so he declined the captaincy. The best is the one who can play in all conditions and at all circumstances not in the conditions tailor made for him like sachin. Is it not known that same sachin failed misrably and was even poor then say Irfan Pathan when he used to play at number 4 and 5 initially.
