I think srilanka is making a mountain out of nothing. why dont we accept the fact that australians are far more professional and deserving to win the world cup.

At least Gilchrist was truthful--- like Hansie Cronje was. I'm sure any cricketer from India, Pak, WI, UK, SL, Zim,BD would never have said this openly. At least Gilly openly admitted this. He broke no rules, and is an honest guy who himself walks off the crease when he feels he's nicked a faint edge which was caught, even if the umpires are not so sure. Bravo, a great man and a gentleman player.

Australians and ICC dont follow the same rules that other teams follow If the samething had been done by a Sri Lankan ICC would have fined that fellow and Mr Hair would have raised a hue and cry. Aussies always get away with these things. Gilchrist was truthful after the match and not before it. Although I am not saying that he is not a great player but he is a great player but no Aussies are not gentleman players as a matter of fact
RE:Not an issue

fellow cricketer???? which country do u play cricket for dude??? Its not an issue alright
First let us understand one thing: During last WC Ponting used Graphite coated, fiber Bat which made the Hard-ball into soft too quickly (without actually having to hit very hard). Once the ball gets soft, it becomes easier for batsmen and bowlers were at the receiving end for no fault of theirs. Even edges are carried over to the fence without much difficulty.
Consequently, ICC had asked Indian, SL and Pakistan players from using their respective bats and even slapped fine, whereas Ponting was allowed to hit his (in)famous 140 in the WC Finals.
Second, Gilchrist did not use this Squash ball in the entire WC which is not by any means an accident! Gilchrist was very shaky and he badly needed a big innings like this to even cement his place in the side (which he acknowledged later). So he chose WC finals so that no one can blame him in his next game which can only be after the WC! Even the WC finals his innings was the only difference between the two teams! Inspite of that he lost balance and threw his bat once during his innings.
It may not be cheat but certainly unethical because they used this tactically. If he is really innocent he should have tried this during one of the round-robin matches.

Gilly came out openly as to how he innovated. He could have kept it a secret. We are like the crabs in the pond, always trying to pull the other down by finding fault with any & every thing. This attitude wont take us far. Gavaskar typified this negative spirit at the start of the world cup & blamed the Australians. He got it from Ponting. Now we are following our legend.

I agree. It might not be mere coincidence that he used it only in the final. But then again, it is unlikely that the squash ball had really changed the course of the game. If Gilly had failed (again) someone else would have raised their game most probably.

hey Mr.Fool, if Gilly and the aussies indeed wanted this as a tactic and was unethical, then why should Gilly tell about it in the first place? he could have easily hidden this fact, and nobody would have even known about this unnecessary issue. some people where kerchiefs and other stuff, for superstitious things, so will you say that is also cheating. comeon dude, grow up and get a life... you are not even worthy to live in this world...get lost forever...

No one told about when Pakistani bowlers used their nails so that they get better out of the ball but it eventually came out, is it not?
Gilchrist clearly mentioned that he did use it for enhancing his grip. Mind you, he had failed in previous outings and opted to use it only during the finals!
He clearly knew taken this to his advantage. Even Hydan, Ponting etc...struggling in the middle during the finals. Let us not forget that.

I agree with u that it is unethical. Whether it is cheating or not depends on if he broke the rules or not, if there were rules for such things at the time.

have u ever played cricket buddy ? its easy to hit a hard ball and not a soft ball soft ball has to be hit with far more power to get the same result.
RE:Close to cheat but certainly unethical
by Loser The Indian on May 08, 2007 11:18 PM Permalink
It is very easy to hit the hardball but when it is easy to bowl as well! You just ask any batsmen in the world whether they would prefer face hard-ball or soft-ball? You can find your level of cricketing genious?
The Aussies would probably have won anyway, squash ball or not in Gilly's glove. In fact the ball can be taken as a part of his gloves. But Aussies could have avoided this storm in a tea cup raked up for nothing -bigdude!!! Come on Aussies grow up will you? A true winner must hold its head high and give no scope to any body to point a finger, for however trivial an issue! These give a chance to the lesser creatures to take away the shine of the win!! No white or black here please!! Applies to any team who wins!
It is a shame that this unnecessary controversy had been raised about Gilchrist using a squash ball. How can that be cheating? It would be cheating if he had used wider bat or something like that. Using a squash ball inside the gloves does not give any undue advantage. It is like using a thicker gloves. If you call this cheating then what about Muralitharan's and Malinga's actions? Please dont take away anything from one of the best one day innings played by Gilchrist.

do you know that it's the sponge inside the squash ball he used and that is what is called "crazy ball" and that has a tremendous amount of shock absorbing ability and recoil.
That is a huge advantage.
It's all the difference between a 6 and a catch on teh boundary.

i believe it also adds a certain amount of uncertainty to how well the batsman meddles the delivery on the day. it was a gamble, with no direct implications on his shot making ability except to provide him with a better grip, which could easily also have been done by using a dotted glove surface!

There are lotta cricketers including dravid who use an inner glove inside the batting glove for grip. ARE THEY CHEATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crap

by Loser The Indian on May 08, 2007 11:16 PM Permalink
If you use it every match it is not cheating because everyone knows that you are using!
I remember Lanka authorities lauded/not only defended Dilhara Fernando's last ball shady tactic against Rohan Bopara. Where were these authorities when Muralitharan and Vaas were rested to make the super 8 meeting more predictable, just to hide them from Aussies! Were they rested to be later used as hidden armor, can Vaas and Muralitharan be hidden anymore!
RE:What about Fernando!!!???(interrobang)
by dude man on May 08, 2007 09:42 PM Permalink
Vaas and Muralitharan's a$$es are exposed and so is the whole Srilankan team's
when srilanka can use players like muralitharan with gifted bending arm,why cannot gilly use squash ball. srilanka could had made a statement with full strength in super eight match against australia. but when they came full strength rain curtailed their match and their winning chances. bad tactic by srilanka. fortune favours always the brave.
if performance enhancing drugs are seen as cheating, then anything which is not a part of standard cricket gear and which may be used to improve performance, should be treated as unfair. in plain and simple english...gilchrist cheated.
