An interesting debate...
by Tanuj Nandan on May 09, 2007 11:20 AM  Permalink

I personally do not feel at all that Gilly cheated in using a squash ball to improve his grip- would using an extra strap on your pads amount to cheating, or would a talk with Waseem Akram to learn the nuances of seam bowling be the same? I wouldn't think so. But I do find some of the observations made to the contrary in the discussion quite interesting.

Who was cheted and by whom, in this world cup?
by asad aslam on May 09, 2007 11:16 AM  Permalink

Indian sponcers were cheated by indian cricket team. And today everyone even board blames them for poor performance of players. It were only them who lost the money in process, niether board nor players or public. Public got a chance to show their faces on news channels first doing all prayers and then doin protests.

UNBIASED ICC
by nitasha jain on May 09, 2007 11:10 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

No, nothing the Australians do ever amounts to cheating by ICC standards...its the Indians, Pakis and SriLankans who are the cheaters...they chuck, tamper, show dissent, and sledge, for which they are regularly handed out bans and fines...the Australians are righteous little lambs who do everything int he spirit of the game...how can they be wrong?

How ridiculous - do you know anything about cricket or pay attention to the news - it is the Aussies who think they are above all that they can resort to such behaviour as sledging, showing dissent, tampering, chucking. It is only becouse half the ICC is Aussies that the amount of bans and fines are less than the rest of the world.

yeah i agree...murali's action is suspect and it can't be justified by that idiotic argument of 'deformity by birth'...tomorrow the Aussies might try to get a law framed favouring sledging by saying it is a genetic problem! And then again the ICC will start defining the degree to which you can abuse, which abuses are allowed and which are a no-no and so on...The aussies get off easy for alot of things though the Indians are handed out mass bans for 'showing dissent' to a pompous ass like mike deness...thats bias!

Guys NTR, Amit.. relax.. I guess even Nitasha share the same thought.. but she was expressing that in an ironical manner. Am I right?

I am a fan of Aussie cricket team.. but i have noticed that ICC is more stringent while punishing the players from the asian teams.

NTR...I was being sarcastic, so chill! Do not assume that being a female i do not know about cricket because that would be a gross misconception on your part. I am just trying to make a point that what Gilchrist has done may not be tantamount to cheating but it does deserve some thoughT from the ICC, who is just casually brushing the matter off. Even HaNsie Cronje was reprimanded for communicating with the coach through headphones though it did not benefit his cricket-playing ability directly. Tomorrow, the Aussies will try something thats not as innocent as a squash ball for better grip...if no law is framed to prevent this, every team will come up with something to 'benefit' their game...its just that the ICC is not as stern in dealing with the Aussies as they are with subcontinental teams...and that is NOT ON!

Your comments are really surprising.. probably you don't know much about cricket or else you are a fan or white cricketers. Under arm bowling, using baxite or carbon layered bat (The great Aussi captain 'Punter' used the carbon bat and made 3500 runs including 5 centuries, before ICC recognized the issue) and now Gilly issue.. all the these shows 'Duryodhana's' technique of winning the game. Coming to chucking claims, I can clearly say that, those claims are just to demoralize Murali, as he is a big threat to Warne's records. Showing dessent,if you are worried abt it, what you call on-field abuses by Aussies to batsmen who are playing..! Aussies are champs in this as well. Even Steve Waugh has been warned by the Umpires in this regard, when he is the captain. Think unbiasedly Nishitha...

Sorry to note, N T R. You seem to have taken Nitasha's comments literally, in most part of your email. I can see the sarcasm in her comment. Except for your comments about Steve Waugh and the warning to him, I think you are also in agreement with her.

Did Gilchrist cheat?
by Pramod Sharma on May 09, 2007 11:03 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

No, it does not amount to cheating. He can ruin any set of bowlers on his day, and he did it during the World Cup final.

If he can ruin any set of bowler with 1/2 squash ball in his glove then why didn't he showed his performance earlier in any W.C. 2007 match?
Why was he just a mediocre in other matches during WC?
Why no other batsmen was able to attack from Australian side (including Hayden-highest run getter of WC 2007) in WC Final?

Ludicrous!

If a player wears 5 underwears and the ball just brushes the hip and goes for legbye four, is it unethical because 5 underwears gave extra thickness to his girth?

Idiotically replied nut!!!
If a person isn't planing to hit the ball from his bat and even then the cricket ball brushes of the batsman's hip and goes for 4 runs then according the the rule no run awarded...
So it's not the matter of 5 underwear or 10, it is the attitude towards game that matter and surely Australian attitude is to win matches at any cost either ethical or non ethical.

Yes if they will do unethical things consistently they should be banned, not because they are winning consistently but because of illegal use of things in cricket like:
1) Use of Aluminium bat by Dennis Lillee
2) Use of graphite core bat by Ricky Ponting
3) Greg Chappell, the captain, ordered his brother, Trevor Chappell, to bowl with an underarm bowling, thus ensuring the Australian team would win the match and avoid a tie against New Zealand on February 1, 1981.
4) And Now use of squash ball under gloves by Adam Gilchrist and that too without informing Umpire & Opposition team's captain

Yes, Gilchrist cheated
by Anantha Krishnan on May 09, 2007 10:51 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I strongly feel that Gilly cheated. Why should a person use an extra element to play when he did not use it in the other matches?!! At least he should have informed the match referee / the umpires that he was using an additional component. That would have been fair.
His knock was a typical Gilly one, but the use of a squash ball in his glove has taken the sheen away from it. It is like using a drug to perform.

Gilchrist did not cheat, he has been innovative. Cheating is to trick someone with a conscience of wrong doing. Gilly did not breach any rule and has been an exemplary performer. Come on guys come off it, credit is where credit is due. its fair play.

RE:Yes, Gilchrist cheated

Yeah right! Now you would expect the player to present a long list of changes be did to his wardrobe since the last match. He wore a lucky charm around his neck, a ring on his little finger, a thread across his middle toe. And this resulted in his sudden change of fortune.

If you really think Gilly cheated, I suggest go tell Viru Sehwag to do the same with his glove. If it works fine else, he can always try a football too in his glove.

The issue is ridiculous and we can add few more degrees to it by claiming its illegal.
