what does the rule says
by tvs kiran on May 08, 2007 08:05 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

if adam gilchrist uses squash ball for girp in the gloves, does icc rules permit to use such things for extra grip,
if permits its ok, otherwise he should be punished.
but i think ICC rules doesnt have any rules to take such action, if they have they would had made a statement till now.
batting grip is very important for any batsmens but they should be under law, but as far as i am concerned gilchrist did a wrong thing.

dude man,

rule says do not carry any object which is not meant to be a protection gear... but there is nothing written abt extra grip material.. ofcourse he played amazing innings.. but this issue will hurt him all through his life.

In rules there is nothing written that for Grip they can use any additional object. they allowed grip on the bat handle only. Additional protection wear is allowed to protect themselves. ICC dont make statement cos the player is from AUS. If any Indian, PAK or SL did this then they make huge cry on us. Gilchrist has to inform on field umpires b4 the match begins or he shud keep quite.. But i am still no idea how can squash ball helps a batsmen with better grip?

Kiran More ............?
by sabteam on May 08, 2007 07:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am not sure that these guys know rules in the ICC. There was well written that using an object which r not derived for protection gear is illegal. innergloves also come under protection gear, extra pad also the same case.. Squashball? i am not sure this is legal or illegal... No one forget gilly's amazing Innings. SL board asking for that is ethical or not and made no offense to Gilly or ACB.
But i am still confused why Rediff went to those greats who have limited knowledge like More?

dude Gilli can actually play...with squash ball or no ball,.... SL couldn't have won even if he didnt use the ball, so they should just shut it.

Yes, but gilli actually said that squash ball helped him to grip the bat. So, ICC shud redefine the rules. Apart from gilli's innings nobody played well in AUS. So anything can happen, dont forget they played in bad light and raining. So far so many things to say that this is the worst world cup and adds few more with the Final.

dude, in AUS theres always someone who performs,...if not Gilli, someone would have played his innings,..so AUS still wins the cup anyways.

ya, but that is secondary issue... in the same way we can assume murli could have been taken 3 or 4 wickets and australia all out b4 200 runs.. also possible in one day cricket. anyhting happens.. dont be so obsessive with AUS.

GILLY-BILLY

First of all findout: does a squash ball in the glove helps for any better gripping of bat, while batting in a match situation. if that can be assertained without any doughts, then a substatial action can be taken on Gilly. the authories who want ot rise the issue should have some facts before making it an official issue.

it doesnt make sense..its ok to put 100 grips on ur bat like ganguly but its not ok to wear a squash ball to get a grip? nonsense..its perfectly fine..in fact it was a very smart move

Very silly of SriLankans to complain! just to increase the grip by better friction or use it to take the reaction.nothing more. Tomorrow Srilankans may complain that the Aussies were taller and hence shouldn't play Cricket!!

gilli did cheat !!!
by gaurav prakash on May 08, 2007 07:35 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

You guys sgould realise this that the half cut squash ball acts as a capacitance system with which immedicatley transforms the mechancial energery it gains into kinetic energry . Its like hitting a ball over a spring , thus letting it go higher on rebound . As nothing except standard gear is allowed , this is surely not correct legally and ethically to use .
Is a spring device allowed in bats ( BTW , this is the reason why aluminium bats are banned !)
Are slip fielders allowed to wear gloves to aid thier catching ?
Then how could the squash ball be allowed . It should be a rematch !

Bhaiyya ,ball ko bat se mara jata hai gloves se nahi.Waise he agar gilchrist ne kaha hota ke usne apne helmet ke andar squash ball raka to aap kya bolte? Mechanical kinetic Funda wah wah!!

Gaurav,
Most sports shoes have some sort of spring systems that protects feet from shocks. So that too must be banned? In that case no cricketer will be wearing legal equipment and all matches were illegal!

Also note that squash ball was in his gloves and would already be compressed, so there is no case of it acting as a capacitance system. Please analyse your points properly before broadcasting it!

Good point Gaurav...just want to add to it..even if the squashy ball thing gives kinetic or whatever energy..the bat should come down in the right direction to hit the middle of the bat and the timing should be right. It was only possible coz Gilly is an awesome player with gr8 timing..

why take anything away from gilchrist when he has tried something new without flouting the icc rules.a squash ball alone is not sufficient to build a superb innings.
tell tendulkar to use a squash ball and see.maybe we may lose to bermuda too in the next game.

It's not fair! it's just dissatisfaction from srilankan board..GILLY is very honest player and never his credibility should be questioned? He did not change his bat dimensions..so it is ok........Those who argue in GILLY's credibility are the ones who don't like to see success of others......CHEERS GILLY!

EXPERTS COMMENTS
by kkeevviinn on May 08, 2007 07:24 PM  Permalink

If Kiran More & Madan Lal being so experts say that there was nothing wrong in that what adam Gilchrist did then who are we to say otherwise.
But there is small element of doubt remains in everyones mind. WHY THIS WAS DONE ? IS IT A NORMAL PRACTICE OR SOMETHING NEW?
If it is a normal practice, why Mr. Kiran More & Mr. Madan Lal who has and had so much to do with Indian cricket didn't even think of mentioning this to Indian batsmen to adopt the same?
Did any of these two gentlemen ever tried any extra device other than the normal protective gear when they played cricket for India?

Why most of the people are afraid to say that this is not right?

Gilly cheat? No way!
by BlurBlur on May 08, 2007 07:22 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Though SL lost the finals they earned a lot of admiration from all fans for the way they played in the WC. However a silly statement like this can undo all that! They must learn to be magnanimous in defeat.

How can putting 1/2 a sqaush ball, which is effectively a small sponge be illegal? If that is the case even inner gloves (that batsman wear inside the batting gloves) must be illegal.

Grow up Lanka...you were beaten fair and square! Sqaush ball or not, you did not stand a chance!

Mr. BlurBlur... although I do agree with the fact that Gilly was no cheat... he deserved his century... I just can't help but think that the Aussies very extremely lucky because of the rain... if Sri Lanka would have had a full uninterrupted 38 overs, Jaya and Kumara were well on the way to chasing 282... just that the rain interruptions made them play rash shots unfortunately... so let's be fair on Lanka... they proved worthy opponents... and could have beaten Australia...

Inner gloves are in the list of allowed gear by ICC but squash balls are not... its like using yur cap while takign a high catch??? should that be allowed too??? Also half squash balls can affect the form as it can conver the potential energy into kinetic while hitting a shot. It acts as a spring.
I am not saying that oz are not the deserving champs, for me even if they hav lost the cup I will cal them the true champions as no other country matches them in the game.
But am upset with whatever happened, watever may b the intensions. Oz didnt need to do this... Last Final it was ponting and the Bat controversy... and now this...

hey Divya, while i respect ur views, u still are not right. we r talking abt adam gilchrist, who can hit sixes effortlessly. he doesn't need sqash ball to convert mechanical energy to kinetic. we all know he can hit sixes with half a bat. i am sure that gilly used it to get a better grip and not power. and something used to get a better grip, like batsmen using inner gloves to get a better grip is not illegal and unethical. think abt the whole scenario and i am sure you will get the facts right...

and there is no rule in the icc saying that u can't use a sqash ball for a better grip inside the gloves. remember he did nothing with the bat. ok what if he had stuffed some handkerchief in the gloves for a better grip.would that be illegal too? and i think all this hue and cry is because its a sqash ball. people think,(and i am sure most people don't even know wht sqash is) it is somekind of power generating stuff. if it was a normal sponge, nobody would have cared. let me tell you, sqash ball is just like harder sponge.
